12 Steps to Improve Your Oral Hygiene

Improve Your Oral Hygiene

We all know dental hygiene is important, but did you know that there are certain things we should be doing every day to ensure a healthy smile? Many people do not realize they have dental problems until it is too late. In this blog-post we will discuss 12 easy habits for perfect oral hygiene!

  1. Use fluoride toothpaste and brush your teeth twice per day. In addition to brushing twice per day, it is important that you brush properly. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and hold the tooth brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums. Avoid aggressive brushing because it can damage your teeth and gums.
  2. Brush for two full minutes, and don't forget to brush your tongue and other areas of your mouth like the inside of your cheeks. Bonus points for you if you use an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes seem to be more effective at removing plaque.
  3. You should floss your teeth after each meal. A waterpik is also considered a good supplemental method for cleaning between teeth, but it is not a replacement for flossing.
  4. Use mouthwash, but remember that mouthwash is to be used as a supplemental oral hygiene practice and NOT in place of brushing and flossing. Mouthwash cannot remove the bacteria and food particles like brushing and flossing does.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly. A good rule of thumb is to visit the dentist every 6 months. This can help you stay on top of any potential dental health concerns as well as get a deep cleaning from the dentist or dental hygienist that you simply cannot get at home. 6. Consume less acidic food and drinks. Soda, sports drinks, juice, and coffee are acidic. So are certain marinades, salad dressings, and certain fruits. If you do consume these types of foods and drinks you might want to consider drinking water or even rinsing with water immediately afterwards.
  7. Eliminate or lower the amount of foods and drinks you consume that contain large amounts of sugar. Candy, cookies, and ice cream are tasty treats, but they are not only high in calories but they can create an environment in your mouth that is ideal for bacteria. These bacteria transform the sugar into acid and that is one of the leading causes of tooth decay. Sugary foods are also harder to remove from teeth as they tend to be sticky.
  8. Be careful about what you choose to chew on. Don't chew on ice or hard candies. Also, don't chew on pencils, pen caps, fingernails, or use your teeth to open bags. Doing so can damage your teeth.
  9. Chew sugar-free gum. It is an effective way of decreasing bacteria. It stimulates saliva glands and helps to cleanse your mouth of bacteria and excess sugar. Sugar alternatives such as Xylitol also inhibit bacterial growth as well. This should not be done in place of brushing and flossing, but as a supplemental oral hygiene practice.
  10. Eat more fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet is not just good for your waistline, but it will help you reduce the amount of bacteria you might otherwise have. Healthy foods can aid with digestion, vitamin support, and more.
  11. Drink more water. Staying hydrated is just good for your health, but many cities add fluoride to the water. In fact, 42 out of the largest 50 cities in the US do. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel! Drinking more water will expose you to more fluoride.
  12. Get dental sealants and fluoride treatments. These are services that your dentist can provide for you. Ask about them the next time you see him.
