Why It's More Important Than Ever
Right Now to Take Care of Yourself

We're living in very stressful and unique times at the moment. No one could've predicted even a year ago that the whole world would come to a standstill and basic human interactions would be curtailed. For many, this is a cause for distress, especially for those who weren't prepared mentally or financially. This is why self-care is more important now than ever. Let's take a look at why it's so important to take care of yourself during this crisis.

Attenuating the Physical Consequences of Stress

As some of you may know, stress can affect us much more than just emotionally. Stress elevates levels of the hormone cortisol in the body, which can lead to all sorts of other disorders including high blood pressure, heart problems, and can even aggravate the symptoms of disorders like diabetes.

This is why many health organisations like the Canadian Mental Health Organisation are promoting the use of self-care as a coping strategy. Self-care includes lifestyle, hygiene, nutrition, and various socio-economic factors. Better self-care ultimately leads to a lower stress response.

Sleep is Essential

Many have been suffering from anxiety lately, and this is one of the many reasons why so many are reporting sleeping disorders as well. Some of those who have been the most affected are healthcare workers. One study that was published in Sleep and Breathing found that female health workers, in particular, were showing the worst symptoms.

No matter what field you’re in, paying special attention to your sleep patterns is essential during this pandemic. One of the steps you can take is establishing a strict sleep schedule and sticking to it. Doing this alone will help your body get prepared for sleep. You should also make sure to turn off all screens at least 2 hours before sleep. If you still need entertainment during this period, switch to an audiobook or any form of audio content, like podcasts for instance.

The Importance of Prioritisation

Prioritisation is also becoming increasingly important. You have to make an inventory of your personal and professional responsibilities. You have to find what should be a priority and what could be postponed or delegated. Making sure that everyone in the house plays their part is also important. Children stuck at home will need to learn how to become more independent and occupy themselves, and they may also need to understand why mommy and daddy might be a bit more grumpy than usual during the workday.

Have Fun

You should also know that the whole world hasn’t stopped, and there are still some ways that you can have fun during this pandemic. Some may want to turn to pokies online if they miss the thrill of going to the casino. Individual sports and installations dedicated to them are also still permitted in many jurisdictions, so you could always consider this option.

If you're worried about not being able to go to the gym, get yourself a bike if you don't have one and enjoy some fresh air while getting a good workout. We would also suggest you look at bodyweight or band resistance exercises if you don't have the money to invest in a full-blown home gym.

Conclusion

Self-care is essential during this period. As a matter of fact, this could be your opportunity to get something good out of this tragedy. So, make sure that you listen to your body and give it the care and rest it needs during these trying times.
