How to Protect Your Skin Barrier?

Having a healthy body includes healthy skin. Seeing someone with glowing skin makes the person more attractive because it indicates that they are taking good care of their body.

Imagine someone with dull, unhealthy, tired-looking skin – this only tells us that this person is not living a happier life. We can also say that having dull skin indicates that we are not taking good care of ourselves.

The good news is, having a skincare routine that is simple and effortless will definitely make your skin glow. Doing little things can make a huge difference when it comes to your skin.

What is Skin Barrier?

We often see this term in products for skin barrier repair, which means that it is the skin's outer layer on the epidermis. Your skin barrier is significant because it is your body's frontline defense against harmful germs, toxins, chemicals, infectious agents, and allergens.

Some of us are taking our skin barrier for granted because we are not experiencing any skin problems. Some people are having difficulty because of their skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, and many more. Some are having a common issue like pimples and skin acne. In this case, our skin barrier plays a massive role in protecting your body.

How Do You Know If The Skin Barrier Is Damaged?

Having a damaged skin barrier shows skin conditions visible to the naked eye, like breakouts and sensitivity. Here are the most common signs of a damaged skin barrier:

  • Skin dullness or dryness
  • Skin redness
  • Sensitive Skin
  • Acne and blemishes

These signs are the most common indicator that you have a damaged skin barrier, and you need to address these issues.

Why Does Skin Barrier Damage?

In reality, it is too easy to harm your skin barrier that we don't even realize that we are damaging our skin. Here are the reasons behind why your skin is getting damaged:

  • Natural Aging
  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Environmental factor, like pollution, indoor air control, and ultraviolet (UV) exposure
  • Extreme temperatures
  • No skincare habits
  • Aggressive skincare habits, like over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, and over-washing
  • Use of skincare products that are incompatible with your skin

What Happens When Your Skin Barrier Is Damaged?

If you have a damaged skin barrier, the usual tendency is that you will have a Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). TEWL will make the moisture continuously evaporates through the compromised skin barrier. With TEWL, it will lead to skin dryness and dehydration. This will contribute to aging, skin inflammation, sensitive skin, and a dull-looking complexion.

With the loss of moisture, your skin will be more vulnerable to environmental assaults like pollution, UV rays, and blue light. These assaults will speed up aging, which will give you wrinkles. Having wrinkles on your skin is not appealing, indicating that you are getting old. Getting old is not an issue, but having younger-looking skin while being old is a plus point.

How Do You Get A Healthy Skin Barrier?

  • Use Sunscreen Daily
It is recommended that you apply sunscreen on your skin to protect your skin from sun damage. When you try to develop a skincare routine, it is best to wear sunscreen because your skin will get more sensitive to the sun.

Sunscreen provides many benefits, such as reducing the risk of having skin cancer, preventing hyperpigmentation, and protecting your skin against signs of photodamage. Make sure you apply your sunscreen product before going out.

  • Keep your skin moisturized
Before applying your sunscreen, it is best to do cleansing and apply moisturizer. Frequent washing of your face and body can dry the skin, which makes your skin feel tight. It will make your skin feel more comfortable with moisturizer, looks healthier, and definitely moisturizes your skin.
  • Have a skincare routine
If you apply your moisturizer and sunscreen for your skin, this means that you are now developing your skincare routine. Having a good skincare routine will help your skin stay in good condition, and you will learn more about what your skin really needs. You will be more conscious about your skin and body will positively impact your overall well-being.
  • Eat Clean and exercise
Not just by using skincare products, but you also have to eat clean by eating nutritious foods and exercise regularly. There is a famous quote saying that what you eat is what you are.

Suppose you eat clean and do regular exercise. In that case, it will cleanse your body internally, and the effects will radiate on your overall body, including the skin. Training your body will also reduce your stress, making you more focused, healthier, and your skin will get vibrant.
