How to Identify if You Are Going Through Stress, and It Needs Attention?

By Jolie Andre

The education system is supposed to be informative, engaging, innovative, and fun, but the current education system makes children anxious and depressed. Moreover, there is pressure on children to achieve a high level of success in academics. If you are parents, haven’t you noticed the pressure the education system puts on your children. Back in the early 1970s, there was comparatively less pressure than today. There are various reasons due to which the pressure of the education system has ramped up. The current education system is focusing more on ranking, comparison, standardized testing, and competition. The research shows that 26 percent of children suffer from anxiety, depression, and mental health issues, and the main reason for their suffering is school pressure.

Assessment Programs

There are international student assessment programs due to which the government of the nations is tailoring policies to get better results and become competitive in the international ranking. Due to this increased competitiveness, the focus on what is joyful and wonderful about education have been sidelined.

Wouldn’t every parent want their children to get benefit from the education system and not get anxious? Imagine an education system where children are not judged by their academic part and valued as a whole child. This type of education system will have less competition and comparison.

It would encourage each child to discover who they are. The pressure that the current education system is putting on children is impacting their self-worth; they would end up judging themselves based on their academics. In reality, academics is just a part of them and not something that can decide their worth.

The Pressure of the System

The children cannot cope with the pressure of the current education system, and they need their teachers, parents, and society to help them and reduce the pressure. The decision-makers of the current education system should question why there is so much pressure and what it is for. The current education system takes up most of the time of the children. This time can be utilized by the children to do things they love. It can be anything, from creative ideas to hobbies.

There is a need for change in the current education system, and the new education system should teach children that the definition of success is broad. The grades and numbers are just the narrow definitions of success, and they don’t describe who the children really are.

Conclusion

The children should be taught to look beyond the grades and numbers; what should matter to them is knowing themselves and being strong in themselves. The current education system should broaden what they teach and their idea of success. This includes measuring the children's non-cognitive skills, such as ethics, character, or social responsibility. The current education system would cause less stress among children if they focus on engaging children with learning, thinking creatively and independently instead of caring more about grades and outcomes. It should pay attention to the nature of the kids and not focus on whether they should conform to fit the system.
