The Health Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish Oil for a Sharper Mind and Better Body

There have been some studies that have determined that omega-3 fatty acid and fish oil are beneficial for health. Several different conditions have been shown to have potential improvements when taking fish oil.

Fish oils can be added to the diet by eating more oily fish, or by simply taking a Cognitune supplement.

Multiple sclerosis

It is said that fish oils help individuals who have multiple sclerosis (MS) based on the protective effects it has on the nervous system and brain. However, there was one study at least that said that it had no benefits for MS.

Prostate cancer

There was one study that found that a low-fat diet along with fish oils might reduce the risk of prostate cancer development. However, there was another study that linked a higher risk for aggressive prostate cancer with higher levels of omega-3.

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published research that suggested that a high intake of fish oil increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer by up to 71 percent, and by 43 percent for all prostate cancers.

Post-partum depression

When fish oils are consumed while pregnant it might reduce the risk of developing postpartum depression. Researchers state that it might be beneficial to consume fish with high omega 3 levels two to three times per week. It is recommended to consume food sources instead of supplements since they also provide minerals and protein.

Mental health benefits

In 2007 there was an 8-week pilot study that was conducted that suggested that fish oil might help young people who have behavioral problems, especially people with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

It was demonstrated by the study that children who ingested 8 to 16 grams of DHA and EPA a day, showed significant behavior improvements, according to ratings from their psychiatrists and parents.

Memory benefits

There was research reported by the PLoS One Journal showed that consuming omega-3 fatty acids can help to improve the working memory of young healthy adults.

However, it was indicated by another study that high omega-3 levels in older women did not prevent cognitive decline.

Cardiovascular and heart benefits

The omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oils might protect the heart when mental stress is high.

The American Journal of Physiology published findings that suggested that people who consumed fish oil supplements for over one month showed improved cardiovascular function when taking tests that were mentally stressful.

Researchers noted in 2012, that the anti-inflammatory properties of fish oil, appears to help with stabilizing atheroesclerotic lesions.

In the meantime, a review of 20 studies that involved nearly 70,000 individuals found that there was no compelling evidence that linked fish oil supplements with a lower risk of early death, stroke, or heart attack.

In one study it was found that individuals with stents in their hearts and taking two blood-thinning drugs along with omega-3 fatty acids had a lower risk of having a heart attack compared to individuals who did not take fish oils.

The AHA recommends eating fish, and oily fish especially, at least two times per week, in order to reduce cardiovascular disease risk.

Alzheimer's disease

It was thought for many years, that consuming regular fish oil might help to prevent Alzheimer's disease. But in 2010, a major study showed that fish oils weren't any better at preventing Alzheimer's than a placebo.

In the meantime, in 2007 Neurology published a study that reported that a diet high in vegetables, fruit, omega-3 oils, and fish reduced the risk of Alzheimer's and dementia.

Vision loss

According to Canadian research in a report published in Investigative Opthalmology and Visual Science Journal showed that adequate dietary DHA consumption helps to prevent individuals from age-related vision loss.

Epilepsy

The Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry published a 2014 study that individuals with epilepsy may have fewer seizures if low omega-3 fish oil doses were consumed on a daily basis.

Psychotic and Schizophrenia Disorders

It was found that the risk of psychosis may be reduced by the omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil.

Nature Communications publishing finds on how a 12-week intervention using omega-3 supplements reduced long-term risk for developing psychotic disorders substantially.

Health in fetal development

Consumption of omega-3 might help to boost fetal motor and cognitive development. Scientists found in 2008 that consuming omega-3 during the final 3 months of pregnancy might help to improve motor, cognitive, and sensory development in the fetus.
