Since the coronavirus pandemic is slowing down, more and more people are going back to work. Some companies still only operate online and keep their workers in their homes, while others have opened their main offices and asked workers to start returning to their normal practices. However, as stress levels are high during this time, it doesn't surprise that going back to work might not be a smooth process. If you, or anyone close to you, are experiencing this stress, don't worry. In this article, we are going to cover the best ways to handle the stress of returning to work post-COVID-19.

Why is it necessary to deal with stress after COVID-19

Some of our readers are quite young and are probably wondering why should they even bother dealing with stress. After all, if you feel stressed out, you can simply go use one of the natural ways to relieve it, right? Well, not quite. Managing stress becomes both more important and more difficult as you get older. So, the sooner you learn how to tackle it properly, the better you will be at avoiding all the perils that come with being too stressed out.

Impacts of stress

It is a well-documented fact that stress can have a huge impact on almost every aspect of our lives. If left unmanaged, or if managed poorly, it can easily cause a lot of harm to both the person experiencing it and the people around them. Among the things that people often experience due to stress are:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Lack of motivation
  • Decreased focus and productivity
  • Health issues
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Chest pain and increased heart rate
  • Loss of sex drive

So trust us when we tell you that handling stress is one of the most important skills you can acquire in life. Even if it seems like you don't have enough time to tackle it after the coronavirus pandemic, try to find some. The sooner you learn how to recognize and handle the stress, the better.

How to deal with the stress of returning to work post COVID-19

Now, the question remains how does one actually handle the stress of returning to work post-COVID-19. Well, the answer to it is pretty similar to handling stress in any other situation. In essence, there are two factors that you need to tackle. Your current situation regarding work, and how you are feeling related to what has been happening in the past couple of months. However, handling these two factors alone is usually much easier said than done.

Figure out your situation

The first thing to do is to figure out your situation at work. A lot of companies have suffered a large financial hit, which is why a sizable number of them are having a hard time adjusting. So, we would advise you to first ensure that you will have a job for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, maybe your company did well during COVID-19, and they are dealing with segmented relocations to new and bigger company premises. All in all, you need to know where you and your company are at. Therefore, try to figure out your situation and whether you should do something about it.

Give yourself time to adjust

After you've figured out your job situation, we suggest that you take things slow, especially if you are still feeling the stress of returning to work post-COVID-19. The lives of people in the past months have been hectic. And, depending on where you are situated, they might still be. So, if you want to deal with all the piled-up stress, the best thing to do is to take things slowly. Don't jump into new projects. Don't rush what doesn't require rushing. And, above all, try to treat your coworkers with kindness. Stress can be quite contagious, so the sooner all of you relax, the less stress there will be in the office.

Standard stress management

As we mentioned, stress can be quite common. In certain situations, it may not even be due to outside factors, but more related to how we feel inside. After all, people can be under quite a lot of stress simply due to bad habits and lack of personal care. And seeing that a lot of people have decided to slack off during the COVID-19 pandemic, here are the main things to do in order to manage stress:

  • Getting enough sleep - the lack of sleep is closely related to feelings of anxiety and stress. So, if you've ruined your sleeping schedule during COVID-19, try to get it back on track. We all need 7-8 hours of sleep, no matter what certain "lifestyle gurus" might tell you.
  • Proper eating - having an unhealthy diet may not sound like a plausible cause of stress, but multiple studies have shown that the two are closely related. Consuming too much sugar and caffeine can easily cause anxiety which can manifest itself as stress. So, avoid sugar and caffeine and focus on healthy, well though-out meals.
  • Exercise - a lack of exercise can easily cause stress, especially if you have exercised regularly before the pandemic. So, get back on your workout schedule ASAP.

Visit a therapist

If all that we've mentioned didn't help you with handling the stress of returning to work post-COVID-19, we suggest that you see a therapist. For a lot of people, COVID-19 was simply a push to better acquaint themselves with both their families and themselves. So, it stands to reason that a lot of things that you would otherwise avoid with work have popped up. Most of those things are not something that you can deal with on your own. So, if nothing works, don't turn towards destructive habits, but do yourself a favor, and talk to a therapist.
