4 Ways to Stay Motivated During Your
Epic Weight Loss Journey
By Scarlet Gratton
If weight loss were all about dieting and exercise, then worldwide obesity wouldn’t have tripled since 1975. With around two billion people classified as obese and overweight over the world, the need to change our lifestyles is accompanied by the need to change our mindsets as well. Simply put, losing weight wouldn’t be possible, at least not in the long term, without motivating yourself to stick to your plans and achieve your goals. While many people believe that dieting or exercise make for the most difficult parts of the weight loss journey, it’s actually motivation that hinders results in both departments.
That is why most people who only address their workout routine in the hopes of picking the most suitable exercises and those who only focus on dieting will rarely succeed completely and maintain their achievements. This is where motivation enters as one of those key factors you should focus on in order for all other aspects of weight loss to work their magic. Here are a few tried and tested methods to build up your motivation to lose weight and stay healthy!
Think in baby steps
One of the most powerful tools used to boost motivation is thinking in increments. When you only know the goal down the line, such as losing a hundred pounds, then you’ll have a difficult time relating to that goal form the initial perspective when it still seems unattainable. However, while losing all that weight seems impossible, does doing 20 squats right now seem impossible? Or taking a look at your lunch and splitting it in half and leaving the rest for tomorrow?
Difficult, yes, but impossible? No. If you let yourself get creative and divide that one major weight loss goal into much more manageable milestones reflected in everyday decisions, then you’ll get a much firmer grip of your achievements. When you’re on a work break, do some lunges, or pick an apple instead of a cupcake at the store. Every choice matters!
Invest in your kitchen
It’s a common misunderstanding that leading a healthy life is a pricy endeavor. If you were to list on a piece of paper all the money you’ve spent on junk food, you’d likely understand that allocating the same funds to fuel your healthy future would serve you far better than a momentary indulgence in the form of French fries. Switching to home-cooked meals is no easy feat, but if you equip your kitchen with quality items such as Bosch appliances, you will reinforce healthy habits with the right tools.
Meal-prepping will suddenly become much easier with a mighty fridge, and cooking all the simpler with a quality stove. Even smaller appliances such as blenders, knives, and Tupperware can make all the difference in inspiring you to make the right choices. After all, why let all the healthy investments go to waste?
Get the right training gear
In a similar manner you should invest in healthy eating on several levels, the same applies to your workout routine. In addition to getting an all-inclusive gym membership, or signing up for aerobics classes depending on your preference and health needs, you’d be surprised how your appearance can impact your performance during training and your overall mindset.
Studies have shown that wearing workout-specific gear can enhance your desire to push yourself harder during training, and not prolong those rest breaks. So, your garments of choice truly matter in the grand scheme of things, and it pays to invest in quality workout pieces that will give you the right level of inspiration during those training sessions. Plus, when you see yourself progress wearing those form-fitting garments, you’ll feel all the prouder of yourself for sticking to your guns.
Build your reward system
Yes, weight loss has plenty to do with sacrifices and letting go of unhealthy habits, but it also comes with a whole new set of healthy rewards you can implement into your motivation system. We all like to treat ourselves to a nice pair of jeans or a fancy meal every now and then, so why not make it one of your milestone rewards? When you hit a certain mark of weight loss, you can book a massage, a weekend getaway with your spouse, or a nice “cheat” meal in the form of a healthy brownie.
Smaller achievements, such as those you hit on a weekly and daily basis should be linked to smaller rewards, but if you need that extra boost on days that are especially difficult, bring out the big guns and treat yourself to something special. Rewards are a powerful motivational tool that will help you reach your goals faster.
Even though your weight loss journey will come with its fair share of ups and downs, you will enjoy it significantly more with the right mindset. Use these tips to motivate yourself and stay true to all of your health goals to provide you with a long, vibrant future.
