5 Habits for a Healthy Heart

The rule here is simple: if you take care of your heart, it will work longer. If you don’t take care, it won’t. We usually don’t think a lot about the way our body functions, but we need to do it if we want to have a good life. Bad habits harm the main markers of health: blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol.

If you don’t pay attention to your body, after some time it will start to show you the signs that something is wrong. If you ignore them, they can lead to some serious health problems and even a heart attack. Although the heart disease can be determined hereditary, there are many things you can do to prevent it. Here are some of them.

Exercise on a Regular Basis

The worst thing you can do is to do nothing. Passivity increases the risk of heart disease so you need to move in order to maintain your health. The best thing to do is to exercise at least half an hour most of the days during the week. But you don’t need to go to the gym and work hard. You can go for a run, ride a bike, or just take a walk.

Although it would be great to start doing some sport, there is a wide variety of things you can do in your everyday life that will keep you away from inactivity. Clean the house, mow the lawn or walk to your work, and your heart will be grateful.

Eat Healthily

Poor heart health can be caused by years of bad eating habits, but it is never too late to adjust your diet and heal your heart. Reduce the size of your portions, eat more fruits and vegetables, consume more omega-3 fatty acids, limit junk food, consume low-fat proteins, avoid salt, and start planning your meals in advance.

The problem occurs because blood consists of water, so if your body is constantly dehydrated, your blood volume drops and the blood becomes thick. Consequently, your body tightens the blood vessels and the heart starts to pump harder to maintain the blood pressure. All of this puts a lot of pressure on your heart, which creates a higher risk of heart attack.

Do Not Smoke

It is known that smoking causes lung problems, but it also has many negative effects on your heart. Chemicals in cigarettes can damage your blood vessels and cause atheroesclerosis. Carbon monoxide in the smoke reduces the concentration of oxygen in your blood, which leads to a higher blood pressure and higher heart rate.

If you quit smoking, the risk of heart coronary disease will drop dramatically. It takes some time for the body to get rid of the damages of smoking, but your health will soon improve and you will start to feel better. And don’t ignore the bad effects of secondary smoking. It can also harm your health, so make sure to protect yourself and your children.

Sometimes we forget that there is a small but strong organ in our chests that makes us alive. We need to take care of it if we want to have a good and long life. So, listen to the signals when your heart is trying to say that something is wrong. Abandon bad habits before it is too late and embrace a new lifestyle that will keep your heart healthy for a long time.
