10 Fun Ways to Add Distance to Your Walk

Why walking?

It's more than just a way to get Walk exercise. It can also improve your mood, strengthen your bones, and help you lose weight.

If you're looking for ways to walk more, try these simple ideas:

  1. Go the long way home from work – if possible – rather than taking a short cut through the parking lot or mall.
  2. Go to a museum or zoo on the weekend when you'll have more time to see all the exhibits.
  3. Walk your dog a little longer each day, or take it for a long walk in the park.
  4. Wear your baby in a carrier while you go out to run errands for an hour rather than driving.
  5. Take a break from work to go on a brisk walk around the block.
  6. Instead of meeting friends for coffee, suggest a walk in the park or along the river.
  7. Join a walking club or start your own with friends.
  8. Make time each day for a 30-minute walk, even if it's just around the neighborhood.
  9. Take a scenic walk on a hiking or nature trail on the weekends.
  10. Plan weekend excursions that involve lots of walking, like visiting a new town or city or going on a nature hike.

  • Walk on uneven surfaces. This helps improve balance and stability.
  • Add a weight vest or ankle weights to increase the intensity of your walk.
  • Walk at a fast pace. This will raise your heart rate and provide a more vigorous workout
  • Take a nature walk. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors while getting in a good workout.
  • Walk on a treadmill. If you're not comfortable walking outdoors, try using a treadmill instead.
  • Walk with a friend. Not only is this more fun, but it also makes the workout more social and less boring.
  • Create a custom walking route. If you're getting tired of your usual walk, try exploring new areas for your walks. This will add some variety to your routine and keep things interesting.
