8 Natural Ways to Fight Depression
Without a Prescription

In the US, 40 million adults suffer from depression.

In fact, one-sixth of Americans take antidepressants. Although medication can be lifechanging for many people, it isn't the answer to curing depression. For some, antidepressants simply don't help. Instead, there are other natural ways to fight depression.

If you're concerned about your low moods or depression, speak to a medical professional. But, why not try out some of the suggestions below too?

1. Start a Fun Exercise Routine

Is there a form of exercise that you loved as a kid? Or, perhaps you've always wanted to try out a new sport?

Now is a great time to start. Why not check out videos on YouTube, try out a Yoga class, or find a running group to join?

Exercise has enormous benefits such as releasing endorphins, boosting your self-confidence, improving your body image, and improving your sleeping patterns.

It's recommended that adults exercise for 150 minutes per week. But, it may take around ten weeks for you to see the benefits of your hard work.

While you're focusing on working out, why not also clean up your eating and provide your body with whole, nutritious foods including lots of leafy greens and fruit? Although this may not cure your depression, it may make a huge difference to your mood.

2. Spend Time with Loved Ones

Unfortunately, when we feel depressed, all we want to do is curl up and hide away from the world.

But, spending time with people that you feel truly understand you can help boost your mood. Why not arrange to meet up and do something with a parent, sibling, close friend, or even a new friend?

If you don't want to chat, why not go to the cinema together? This will help alleviate your feelings of loneliness while also reminding you that there are people who love you in the world.

Try to build in social time during your week. This could even involve meeting new people or joining a depression self-help group.

3. Listen to Music

Did you know, music boosts your mood and can even be useful in the fight against depression?

Simply listening to your favorite band through headphones can help you drown out the rest of the world. Why not consider going to a live gig or listening to new genres too?

Classical music is a great way to unwind and has been proven to relieve pain, improve sleep quality, and reduce the symptoms of depression!

4. Try Forest Bathing or Walking in Nature

On a weekend afternoon, why not get out of the city and explore your local woods or visit a beach either alone or with a friend?

Spending time in nature has been proven to relieve the symptoms of depression. If you live in the city, you're likely used to seeing unfriendly faces and drab buildings every day.

Nature helps boost our serotonin levels and may give us a short-term fix. You don't need to get away for a whole weekend, even spending your lunch break walking around your local park can boost your mood.

5. Start a Regular Journal Practice

By writing down your emotions, you are transferring these negative feelings onto paper and freeing yourself of them.

Develop a regular journaling practice where you not only write down what's bothering you but also how you feel that you can solve your current problems.

Journaling enables you to self-reflect, relieve stress, and inspires creativity. Try picking up a pen and answer the prompt, how am I feeling today?

6. Develop a Calming or Simple Routine

If you're struggling with depression then you may find yourself drifting from one day to the next without much semblance of a routine.

Instead, write down a few daily tasks that you want to achieve and tick off any that you manage. Slowly, set yourself a routine that you enjoy.

This could involve things such as waking up at 8 am, washing your face, eating breakfast, working out for twenty minutes, journaling, and getting to bed at a good time.

7. Consider Volunteering in Your Community

Sometimes, the best way to alleviate depression is to focus your attention away from yourself and onto someone else.

Do you know a neighbor that needs help with babysitting or dog walking? Perhaps an elderly relative would enjoy a friendly phone call?

Why not look out for local volunteering opportunities such as a gardening project or why not become a vulnerable young person's mentor?

8. Have You Considered Medicinal Marijuana?

Although this is still a controversial topic, it is proving popular in many states across the US. If you think that you may benefit from marijuana, visit this website.

Marijuana is a useful tool when it comes to managing pain, reducing anxiety, and even easing the side-effects of chemotherapy.

However, if you do not take the right amount of marijuana, you may notice negative side-effects. So, always speak to a professional before you take it.

There Are Many Natural Ways to Fight Depression

Unfortunately, there is not a one size fits all for depression treatments. You need to learn what is right for you through trial and error. This can feel overwhelming when you're in the midst of a particularly difficult depressive episode.

But, try to remember that this too will pass. In the meantime, read many self-help books to find new ways to help treat your depression and build useful routines into your life.
