We live in an age where consumerism has reached an all-time high. With storage facilities being on the rise, it's clear now more than ever that we are in dire need of extra space. Entire studies have been conducted on how living in a messy space affects our moods. The results have shown that decluttering is good for your mental health in more ways than one. So if you have been looking for a good way to regain your calm, you might find success with a good old spring cleaning.

As it turns out, there are not just one or two benefits of decluttering - there's a whole bunch of them. With all the good things that can come out of the process, there's no reason for you not to spend your next weekend getting rid of some excess clutter. 

Declutter and you will focus better

People are often taught that multitasking is an enviable skill. In order to have enough time to accomplish all of our tasks for the day, we need to be able to do many things at once. What this does is confuse our brains by shifting focus from one subject to the other. As if multitasking weren't hard enough by itself, imagine adding a pile of clutter to the mix. You will find it hard to get anything done when you are sitting next to a pile of laundry that needs to be folded. 

To regain your focus and not have a cluttered house distracting you, all you have to do is get rid of all the items you haven't used in a while. And, of course, keep your living space clean. What you decide to do with the surplus items is up to you but people have discovered that storage services can be helpful in the process. You get to keep all of your items in a safe place but not have them disrupt your daily life. It's a win-win situation. 

You will be more relaxed

Imagine the following scenario - you just got home from a busy day at work and you want to unwind by watching a movie and sipping a hot beverage. What do you see when you imagine yourself this way? While there are many things you might be seeing, you are certainly not imagining yourself sitting in a cluttered room. 

Clutter is distracting. It will prevent you from enjoying your time fully and it certainly won't do a thing in helping you get a much-deserved break in life. Of course, how bothersome clutter will be depends on the person. Some people can't focus when just one item is out of place, while others are more tolerant of mess and clutter. 

Let decluttering be a part of your stress-free life

One of the main reasons why decluttering is good for your mental health is because it helps you be less stressed and anxious. Far be it that decluttering alone will help you with your anxiety. But it's been proven that living in a constant mess can serve as a source of chronic stress. When trying to ease an anxious mind, it's important to take any and every resource you have at your disposal - and decluttering is certainly one of them. 

If you suffer from anxiety, then you are already hypervigilant to any sort of stress response. Any disruption in your environment could only make matters significantly worse, and a cluttered room can be a huge disruptor. So do yourself some good by decluttering and maintaining good mental health. Of course, this is just one of the many actions you should take if you suffer from anxiety - but it's a good start. 

Decluttering can give you a sense of accomplishment

While the era of social media has brought many good things, it has also brought about a lot of unreal expectations. And these expectations go far beyond our body image. It is virtually impossible to visit Pinterest or Instagram without seeing loads of pictures of perfectly decorated homes. So when you look at your room and your clutter, you might get a sense of failure. It goes without saying that you should not let these thoughts cloud your judgment. However, if you can't ignore them, the second best thing you can do is declutter your home. 

Even though comparing yourself to others doesn't make any sense and shouldn't be something you do, you will most likely feel accomplished when you take a look at your room and see perfect order. Hey, you will get a sense of accomplishment just by handling a chore of great proportions, which decluttering certainly is. And a person that feels inner accomplishment is usually a happy and mentally healthy person.

You are bound to be more productive

After all, how can you not be more productive when you don't have to spend so much time looking for misplaced items? Decluttering will pile up hours of time that you will now be able to use more wisely. With more time at your disposal, you will be able to take care of more chores every day. Usually, we feel inadequate and incompetent when we aren't able to tackle all of our tasks for the day. Decluttering will take care of that and give you the much-needed peace at the end of the day that you need. 

It's really not that hard to see why decluttering is good for your mental health as there are benefits galore. Just about every aspect of your life will be improved after freeing up some space in your home. The only problem you might have is deciding to let go of some items. But, as mentioned, a storage unit will take care of that problem right away. So the next time you have a day or two off, decide to spend them cleaning out your house. Satisfaction and happiness afterward are guaranteed!
