10 Dark Spot Remedies You
Can Find In Your Kitchen

Uneven skin tone characterized by freckles, pimple marks and dark patches on the face is a common problem, especially among women.

These dark spots are called hyperpigmentation and are caused due to a number of factors like elongated exposure to sun, hormonal changes brought on by birth pills, pregnancy or menopause, medications, genetics, acne scars and from picking your zit.

The presence of these spots on the face can make a lot of people self-conscious and affect their confidence levels. Now before you rush off to buy some commercial chemical injected cosmetic drug, be aware that those too can have side effects.

Here are a few natural substances you can use to get rid of those dark spots and achieve your perfect and even skin tone:

1. Sandalwood Paste

Sandalwood contains a wide range of medicinal benefits for skin due to its anti-tanning, anti-aging, astringent and skin softening properties.

Sandalwood can help you deal not only with the dark marks on your face; it can also fight itchiness, skin inflammation and redness on the skin.

To prepare sandalwood paste, mix 1 tablespoon of sandalwood powder with just enough milk to make a paste. Now apply this paste on the dark spots for 25 minutes and then wash it off. Do it daily for 2 – 3 weeks to get rid of the spots.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains naturally soothing properties, along with being anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. All of these characteristics mean that no skincare regime is complete without aloe vera.

Applying aloe vera gel directly to the affected areas will help you get rid of any spots, blemishes or scars that are present. It can help you get an even tone.

You can buy aloe vera gel from drugstores although it is recommended that you get a leaf and then extract the fresh gel out of it.

Take some aloe vera gel and directly apply it on the dark spots by gently massaging the area. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash it off. Do it twice daily until the spots clear away.

3. Buttermilk

Buttermilk contains astringent properties and is also high in acidity. These two combinations make it perfect for treating dark spots or other skin related issues.

Applying buttermilk on your face helps get rid of any excess oil while also providing a cooling effect. It also eliminates any dead skin and dirt, making the skin tone even.

To use this remedy, pour some buttermilk in a bowl and get hold of cotton balls. Now dip the balls in buttermilk and apply it on the dark spots. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off. Do it once daily until the issue resolves.

You can also add a few drops lemon juice to buttermilk for added benefits and a more effective remedy.

4. Strawberries

Strawberries are vitamin C rich fruit which also contains folic acid. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant which eliminates free radicals stealing oxygen from healthy skin cells. Folic acid aids in regeneration and production of new skin cells.

Using strawberry on your face combats effects of UV rays due to the presence of ellagic acid, removes excess oil thereby preventing acne formation and contains skin lightning substances that help remove blemishes and lighten your skin.

To make the strawberry mask:

  • Mash 3 ripe strawberries in a bowl.
  • Add 2 teaspoons of yogurt.
  • Add 2 teaspoons of honey
  • Mix these ingredients together to make a paste.
  • Now apply this mask on your face and wash it off after 10 minutes with warm water. Do it once or twice a week until you get the desired results.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric is a widely used herb for not just cooking, but also for a variety of medical problems like rashes, joint pains, teeth cavities, dark spots etc.

This is due to the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties found in turmeric which provide quite a wide range of benefits. For skin care, turmeric can not only get rid of your spots but also provide a glowing skin with a smooth texture.

Fabhow says you can use turmeric by making a paste. Take 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder and add just enough milk to make a paste. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice for enhanced effectiveness.

Whisk the ingredients together till they attain a paste-like texture. Now apply it to the affected areas and leave it on for 5 – 10 minutes before washing it off with water. Do it once daily for 1 – 2 weeks.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

cider vinegar to balance the pH levels of the skin, absorb excess oil and provide a cooling effect.

Dabbing diluted apple cider vinegar on your face will help get rid of the dead skin and let the new, unblemished skin appear.

To use apple cider vinegar, pour it into a bowl and use a cotton ball to dab it on the affected areas. Leave it on overnight and rinse it off in the morning. You will notice a visible reduction in dark spots within 1 – 2 weeks of using this remedy daily.

7. Oatmeal Mask

Oats are not just good for your physical health; they are also beneficial for your skin. The Oatmeal powder can cleanse and exfoliate your skin as it contains saponins, a naturally occurring cleansing substance.

Applying oatmeal mask will not only get rid of blemishes and spots but also soften your skin, combat the effects of UV rays and remove dead skin cells.

To make the oatmeal mask, grind ½ a cup of oats and add 3 tablespoons of lemon juice to make a paste. Apply this paste on the affected areas and scrub gently. Now rinse it off with water. Do it thrice a week until you get rid of the spots.

8. Potato

Who knew the most commonly found vegetable in households holds the answer to your dark spots problem? Yup, that’s right. Potatoes can help you get rid dark spots.

Potatoes contain catecholase enzyme which is helpful in combating dark spots and blemishes on the skin. It is rich in vitamin B6 which aids in new skin cell production and contains mild bleaching properties that lowers hyperpigmentation and helps lighten the skin.

It is extremely easy to use potato for reducing dark spots – peel the potato and cut it into thin slices. Rub these slices on the affected area for a few minutes and let the juice stay on the face for 15 minutes. Then rinse it off with water.

Do it once daily for 1 week. Continue the remedy for another week if your spots don’t go away after 1 week.

9. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is known for its wide-ranging benefits when it comes to hair and skin care. It nourishes the hair and provides moisture to the skin that keeps it from drying out.

Applying coconut oil can also help lighten dark spots present on your face and reduce the appearance of any blemishes.

To apply coconut oil, pour some oil into a bowl and use a cotton ball to dab it on the affected area. Keep it on overnight and wash it with water next morning. Do it daily for 1 – 2 weeks to get visible results.

10. Cucumber Mask

Cucumber has a strong cooling effect on the skin and is known to be extremely beneficial for the skin. It contains anti-oxidant properties and a substance called silica which helps in skin rejuvenation and reducing blemishes on the skin.

To make a cucumber mask, grate 1 fresh cucumber with the skin on. Add a little honey and mix them together to get a paste-like texture. Apply the mask on your face for 30 minutes and then wash it off.

Do it every day for 1 week to get desired results.
