How to Use CBD Oil for Pain

According to the GSK Global Pain Index 2017, 95% of the global population experiences some kind of body pain all the time. While many of us deal with it through medication and massage therapies, here is a new treatment on the block—CBD oil!

Most of us know about the therapeutic benefits of CBD products. It helps in reducing anxiety, insomnia, depression, inflammation, even epilepsy and other mental problems. It is also known for successfully reducing or completely removing chronic body pains. A daily dosage of CBD oil for a few months has shown magically results on people who suffer from joint or muscular pains from a long time.

While many people across America are using Cannabidiol to find relief from pain, one must know that the research and studies on this topic are still fancy. It would take quite some time for the medical team to put a safety stamp on the positive use of CBD oil in the treatment of pain and other problems.

In the light of this article, we will get to know more about CBD oil, its effects and the ways to use it.

What is CBD oil? Is it legal to use the same in America?

CBD oil is made from a chemical compound called Cannabidiol or CBD, which is found in the cannabis plant. Unlike other cannabis compounds, CBD is non-psychoactive in nature. This means that it doesn’t create intoxicating effects on human mind, like marijuana. In other words, CBD does not contain nor has very little quantity of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, which is primarily responsible for creating the ‘high’ in living organisms.

Legally speaking, CBD products are allowed to have 0.3% or less THC. If the amount of the same is more, then federal charges may apply to the manufacturing company. Also, due to the very reason, CBD has been made legal to consume across all 50 states of the US under the 2018 Farm Bill. It has also been excluded from the list of ‘controlled substance.’ However, it does create some sleep-inducing effects in a positive way. Perhaps, this is how it helps in alleviating many mental and emotional problems, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain relief.

So, how exactly does CBD reduce pain in human body?

Well, the relationship between CBD and human body is a bit complex. The research done in the area is also quite limited but anyone with a simple knowledge of the human body will be able to grasp the interaction that takes place between CBD and the body.

Let’s just understand that CBD after consumption interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the body. This system encircles CB1 and CB2 receptors. The former is found in the brain and central nervous system while the latter is located in the spleen and immune system. CBD has an inverse effect on these receptors, in a way that inhibits the absorption of anandamide, a natural cannabinoid molecule which regulates pain in the body.

CBD increases the level of anandamide in bloodstream and thus, helps in reduction of pain in the body. According to another research, it was concluded that CBD interacts with alpha-3 glycine receptors, which decreases chronic body pain and also reduces inflammation.

A regular use of CBD also activates protein receptors, such as, vanilloid receptor TRPV1, which controls the awareness of pain and inflammation. Clearly, CBD is only proving itself in the positive light of healing chronic pains.

Studies done in the area

There is still a need for comprehensive studies in the effects of CBD on body and brain, yet there are a number of them to prove the fact that CBD, in fact, does work like a charm in alleviation of chronic pain.

According to a 2018 review, following are the statements made on the effects of CBD in pain relieving-

  • Cannabinoids are effective but not equally in all pain conditions
  • Cannabinoids won’t necessarily help in reduction of kinds of pain in the human body
  • It might only reduce the chronic pain in a small amount
  • 5 random trials took place to prove that CBD provided more than 30% reduction in pain for people with chronic neuropathic pain
  • As per Cochrane Review, CBD has proven to have superior effects than conventional medicine in the treatment of neuropathic pain

There are other studies published in the same matter as well. Let’s discuss a few below.

  1. As per a 2015 study published in Neurotoxicology Journal, CBD inhibits glutamate levels in the brain and spinal cord, which largely affects the increased sensation of pain and transmission in human body.
  2. According to a 2016 study done on lab mice, it was concluded that a dosage of 6.2 mg effectively reduced inflammation and arthritis pain. The same was published in the European Journal of Pain.
  3. A 2017 study published by the Journal of Pain revealed that CBD treatment helped in the positive treatment and prevention of joint pain and nerve damage in mice, induced by osteoarthritis.

How to use CBD oil for pain?

There are different ways to introduce CBD oil in human body. Your CBD oil treatment for pain also depends on the area of the body it's affecting. For instance, for muscles spasm it is recommended to apply the oil directly on the skin. One should use a CBD-infused derma patch for the treatment.

According to a 2016 study done on arthritis, it was concluded that transdermal application of CBD can

sometimes be more effective than oral ingestion. Also, when CBD oil used as a topical, it ten folds its permeability.

In another case, you can have CBD oil orally, in the form of tincture and capsules. When you consume CBD oil as tincture, the best way is to squeeze the drops under your tongue and keep it that way for 30 seconds before swallowing it. It should start working for you in about 20 to 30 minutes.

One can also consume the CBD in the form of CBD edibles. When you ingest the edibles, it takes about 2 to 4 hours to take effect. Edibles come in the form of gummies, candies, brownies, honey, and drinks.

What should be the ideal CBD dosage?

Since CBD is not regulated under the Food and Drug Administration, there is no fixed dose of it. You can start from a minimum dosage of the same and increase the quantity every second day or a week as suits you. Once you feel you have found the most suitable dosage for the treatment of your pain, keep it constant for a few days.

You can then start decreasing the dosage to see if you are getting the same result at a lesser dose. To put it simply, you will have to find your ideal dosage yourself. To get the best results, consult your doctor or a medical professional.

Closing thoughts

No matter which CBD product you choose to treat your pain, it is important to check its THC level, certificate of analysis, and third-party tests results. Also, always purchase high-quality and verified CBD oil for your treatment.

Even though it cannot be promised that CBD oil will surely relieve you from your pain, people have accepted its positive results in the past and current scenarios. So, hope for the best and give this natural therapy an honest try.
