3 Must-Know Cavity Prevention Tips

Nearly 90% of adults have had at least one cavity. Left untreated, it can lead to various problems including pain, swelling, and trouble chewing.

That’s not all, it can also turn into an abscess. That is, an infection in or around the tooth—and over time, it can travel to other parts of the body.

1. Brush Regularly With the Right Technique

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes each time. That’ll get rid of any plaque (an invisible layer of bacteria) that’s built up on your teeth.

For the best results, use an electric toothbrush—they’re more effective at removing plaque than the manual variety.

The way you brush is also important. For one thing, your toothbrush should be at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. And don’t just brush up and down or side-to-side—you want to brush in a circular motion along the inside and outside of the tooth surface.

2. Floss Every Day

Floss your teeth at least once a day. If anything, it's the only way to clean between your teeth. Ideally, you want to do it before brushing—that way, the particles that are dislodged will be removed when you're brushing your teeth.

Start with about 18 inches of dental floss. Wrap it around your index and middle fingers and gently insert it between your teeth. Curve it into a “C” shape against the side of the tooth and slide it up and down. Repeat on the rest of your teeth.

Tip: Don't apply too much pressure, otherwise, you can irritate your gums.

3. Avoid Sugary and Acidic Foods

Harmful bacteria feed on the sugar and carbohydrates that you consume. As they eat, they produce acids that attack the tooth enamel. Ultimately, it’s this process that leads to cavities (click here to learn more).

For this reason, it’s best to avoid sugary foods such as candies, cookies, and soda. The same goes for acidic beverages (e.g. coffee, tea); they can wear away the enamel that protects your teeth.

If you must eat these foods, rinse your mouth with water afterward. Or if you can, brush your teeth. Just make sure to wait at least an hour before doing so as the enamel needs time to re-harden.

The Importance of Cavity Prevention

Proper dental care is key to cavity prevention. This means brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis. Also, you want to be mindful of the foods that you eat—some can be more damaging to your enamel than others.
