Want to Heal your Arthritis? Be Silent
By Ian Cameron
Silence is your very nature. It is your very essence. The outer world is full of noise and chaos, but the inner world of your Spirit is silent and serene. As soon as we talk, the beauty of silence is broken. Silence is a healer. If you are trying to recover from arthritis, I strongly recommend that you conserve your words. So much energy is wasted in trivial chit-chat and gossip. This energy could be used to heal your arthritis. When you consolidate your energy through silence, you feel stronger and your arthritis heals faster.
To help recover from my own arthritis, I attended many spiritual retreats. A few days into these retreats, everyone attending was expected to enter an extended period of silence. Initially, it took awhile for my mind to settle down. It was if there was a resistance to the silence. It took a bit of getting used to not verbally expressing my thoughts. But very soon, my mind melted into the calming silence that is always there in the background. After several days of silence on such retreats, I began to love it. I felt joyful not talking, sometimes even blissful. Then, after a few days of not uttering a word to anyone (not even nonverbal communication), we were all instructed to come out of silence. And I had resistance to that too! I wanted to stay in this silent new world forever.
When we are silent, the mind quietens down and allows our body to rebalance. In Ayurvedic medicine, arthritis is due to an imbalance in the 'Vata Dosha' or the wind element in the body, as well as a disturbance in the 'Pitta Dosha' or fire element. Crippling arthritis is like a firestorm burning out of control throughout the physiology. But when we don't talk for a period, the Vata Dosha settles down. The firestorm loses its wind if you like. Consequently, the fire element begins to reduce and normalise. Silence helps settle the inner turmoil of arthritis and promotes inner balance and health.
So if you are an arthritis sufferer, talk less. Let your body heal through not talking so much. Go for quality of words rather than quantity. Speak from the heart with meaning and purpose. Never say a harsh word to anybody for the Divine dwells within everyone's heart. Our words should have a soothing effect on others. Calm people's minds with what you say rather than stirring up a whirlwind of emotion in the other person. The purpose of words is to create silence.
