Find Peace By Creating a Backyard Oasis

By Elliot Caleira

A well-tended backyard can be a great addition to any home, especially if you are looking to create a peace-centered home. It's a place to play, relax, and host parties or barbecues. The way you choose to use your backyard space is entirely up to you, but a few small additions can change the energy as a whole. So if you want to use your backyard to get closer to nature and revel in the natural environment, there are a few options for you.

Make a Lounge Area

An easy and often inexpensive idea is to create a lounge area in your backyard. This gives you somewhere to get together outside and just feel the sun on your skin. Lounge areas are flexible and can go just about anywhere. You can create one in the grass if you want, but most people prefer to have a simple stone or concrete base to make sure the chairs and other furniture are steady and level. That way you can have a little walkway to the lounge area and you won't have to worry about your guests or your furniture sinking into the grass. Then all you have to do is add the furniture you want. It could be something traditional like chairs and tables for sitting. Or you can always go for swings or hammocks to add something a little more interesting.

Add a Fire Pit

If this idea seems a little too flashy for you, then go for the classic fire pit instead. It offers the same kind of close-knit environment but with a different feel to it. Fire pits are primarily used during the evening and nights which gives you a chance to appreciate the nature surrounding you that you might not always experience. And despite what the name suggests, you don't have to create a pit for one of these. In fact, they're pretty easy to make so you can save money by doing it yourself instead of hiring a contractor. The most important thing is to section off an area of your yard that you wouldn't mind getting burned. As long as it's a safe distance from your house and you have a lot of kindling available in your area, you should be good to go.

Construct a Pool

Pools are another fairly simple addition to your backyard. Aside from giving you a reason to go outside more often, pools are a great addition if your home is prone to hot summers or you have kids that want to go to the pool regularly. This way, you don't have to pay to go to a public pool and you have a convenient way to cool off right outside your door. Pool builders in Houston are some of the busiest workers every spring and summer for this reason alone.

However, before you start calling a local contractor, you should take a step back and do a little research and figure out whether it's really for you. Sometimes people are so excited to have a pool in their backyard they overlook the financial investments or the upkeep involved in the process. It's true that the finished product will look great, but that's only if you're prepared to clean it and keep it maintained properly. On top of that, there are many different types of pools that you could get and various building materials you have to consider, as well as the sizes and shapes that are available. These may all affect the overall price of the pool and how structurally sound it is. For example, a vinyl pool won't cost as much but it also won't last as long as a sturdier material like concrete. And you can feel free to get an above ground pool as large as you want it, while in ground pools more time and planning to prepare. It all depends on what you think you want and what will work with your house.

Build a Patio

And finally, you can choose to add a patio to your house if you want more of a connection to your house. When most people think of patios, they think of large railed porches that are attached to the home. They're usually raised up and have stairs leading down into the yard. These are perfectly acceptable if it's the kind of look you want to go for, but there are other options for you as well. If you don't think you have the structural support or height available for that kind of patio, you could always try a stone or brick patio instead. These are similar to a lounge area, as they can be designed right outside of your door or have a pathway to them. They can be open or closed off on the sides depending on the style you think you want. Their design is entirely up to you, and they can be fairly inexpensive on top of that.

You'll be surprised how different your yard looks with any kind of patio added on to it. And they're a great way to coax rest of the family out into the yard more often. It gives you a space where you can enjoy nature while still being steps away from your home if you need something. And you can use this to your advantage, eating meals out there together, or simply relaxing.
