6 Amazing Benefits of Good Oral Hygiene

Brushing twice a day and flossing properly was a principle drilled into us as kids. As I matured into adulthood, the need to take care of my oral hygiene dramatically subsided. In my early 20s I kept developing gingivitis and had to have a series of fillings and removed cavities. It was embarrassing, to say the least. I've developed a healthy oral hygiene routine that includes regular dental maintenance checkups for healthy teeth. You should also get your oral health checked by a professional, such as, who has years of experience and advanced dental equipment to provide you with flawless results. Here are several life-saving benefits of keeping your teeth clean.

1. Prevent Dementia

Dementia is hard to diagnose in people, as its caused by several brain illnesses. This results in severe memory and behavioral deterioration. What we do know about the disease is that 50 million people (globally) live with some form of dementia, as Alzheimer's is the most common cause. According to the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, maintaining healthy teeth is responsible for lowering the risk of dementia.

2. Better gum health

Can you imagine your gums bleeding each time you eat or brush your teeth? A lack of not brushing your teeth can make this a reality: fast. This is because harmful bacteria infects your oral health – causing a variety of illnesses. Plaque is one of the most common bacteria, since too much plaque buildup causes gum inflammation. This leads to gingivitis and periodontitis. Bleeding, tooth loss and swollen gum are just a few symptoms.

3. Attractive

The eyes and mouth are two places we’re most likely to look at when we’re talking to people. Grungy, mustard-yellow teeth and rancid breath are not attractive. (People who think otherwise may need a brain scan.) You don’t need a scientific study to tell you that brushing daily gives you the appearance of being a functioning, healthy adult who takes care of him/herself.

4. Prevent Heart Attack

As mentioned previously, not brushing regularly causes gum disease, leading bacteria to treat your mouth like the Wild Wild West. When this bacterium penetrates into your bloodstream, it spreads massively throughout your entire body. Should this enter your heart, risks of heart attacks double.

5. Save Money

If gum and tooth problems happen, you may require surgery or other medical treatments (which an orthodontist assistant school may help). These can be expensive, especially if you don’t have the budget for unexpected emergencies. Compare hundreds of dollars in medical bills to the cost of a tube of toothpaste, a toothbrush, and a package of floss sticks (all of which can be bought at a dollar store for somewhere around $7 total).

6. Diabetes

If type 2 diabetes goes untreated, it can lead to disability and possibly premature death. When blood sugar levels are high, our body can’t manufacture insulin quick enough to combat it. Insulin is a hormone created by your body to use blood sugar for much needed energy. Gum disease helps develop type 2 diabetes. This is because inflammation makes it more difficult for your body to efficiently use insulin. Preventing gum disease and type 2 diabetes is as simple as brushing every day and practicing good oral health.

It only takes roughly 2 minutes in the morning and night to have a clean mouth. With the exemption of nighttime. As we’ve just discussed, there’s a wide variety of reasons to consider going the extra inch for saving your life. It is also recommended to brush for at least 2 minutes at night. If brushing twice a day is too demanding, opt for brushing for at least 3 minutes prior to your bedtime routine. This way your oral health has a chance to improve while you sleep.
