Beginner's Guide To Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy, also referred to as “physical therapy”, is one of the paths towards physical recovery that involves physical rehabilitation. The Origins Of Physiotherapy 

There are studies which reveal that the beginnings of physical therapy are rooted somewhere in 460 B.C. The great Ancient Civilizations’ celebrated heralds of medicine in the likes of Hippocrates and Galen were its forerunners. They were the first who introduced physiotherapy as another branch of manual, scientific therapy.

But it was in the 1880s that PT was first officially recognized and registered by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden, and then by the rest of the world. 

Soldiers who were injured in wars, people who were born with disabilities or had acquired them in accidents, and children with underdeveloped bones and limbs, were aided into recovery via PT.

The 19th century saw advancements in what’s deemed as the era of “Modern Physiotherapy”, with methodologies that have been improved and are continually utilised today. 

Common Conditions Treated Through PT 

Musculoskeletal Disorders 

MSDs are disorders wrought about by work-related conditions that result in distress in muscles, joints, tendons, cartilage, nerves, and the like. The amount of effort and physical strain you exert in your work environment, the work environment itself, and the hours you clock in (whether in the office or at home) are stressors that may negatively affect your musculoskeletal functions. 

The NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) has been collecting shreds of evidence regarding the correlation between work conditions and stressors of musculoskeletal disorders. Said data points specifically to MSDs around the neck, shoulders, back, pelvic region, elbows, hands, and wrists. 

79% of the working population go through discomforts and strains in these body parts, so much so that submitted permissions for rest and recovery from work-related MSDs are overwhelmingly common behind sick leave filing. 

On top of that, the age range is very wide, spanning from 25 to 54 years old. Though ageism significantly increases the likelihood of incurring MSDs and chronically at that, function impairment due to work still remains the major source. 

Other Disorders 

Aside from work-related musculoskeletal disorders, there are severe bodily afflictions that need a strong physical therapy scheme. These involve neurological conditions like brain or nerve trauma, concussions, spinal cord damage, and vestibular dysfunction.

Neurological injuries greatly affect the body’s overall functioning and movement capacity. After all, the nervous system is responsible for transmitting messages to your muscles, bones, nerves, tissues, etc., so that they’re able to operate in the manner that they’re supposed to. 

Therefore, any kind of damage to any part of this system will ultimately impede certain physical capacities. This is even more evident when the injury is on the brain and/or spine whereby the effects are doubly serious, longer rehabilitation will be necessitated.

Cardiopulmonary conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and post-myocardial infarction (MI) are in a separate category themselves. Cardiopulmonary physical therapy specifically treats these conditions that have to do with the recovery of physical functions interlinked with the impairments in the heart or the lungs.
