Everyone knows that their diet should contain more fruits, veggies, whole grain products, and so on. Still, in addition to this basic principle, there are several other things you can do that will help you lose significant weight and simultaneously increase your levels of fitness.

Sequel to eating a healthy diet, you should develop the habit of reducing or even eliminating some things from your diet. Top on the list is processed meat, such as sausages, bacon, and cold cuts. 

Studies show that people who consume an excess of processed meat have a higher risk of dying from cancer and heart disease.

As a tip, you should start consuming more fish and green tea because green tea lowers your chances of dying from heart disease. Also, the omega 3 found in fish regulates the rhythm of your heart rate, thereby lowering your chances of having sudden heart attacks.

Exercise

The second habit that guarantees longevity is the habit of adequate exercise. Many people stop exercising as they grow old, especially in their late teens and early twenties. It is worrisome to believe that people who were active in sports when growing up are also found wanting. However, the human body, made up of around 610 muscles, is meant to be exercised throughout your life. 

You need to make it your habit of exercising every single joint in your body every day. This keeps your joints and muscles agile and flexible.

Regular exercise assures that you have a more excellent balance and mobility and helps to diminish the likelihood of muscle or joint pains and problems, especially later in life.

Develop the habit of exercising 200 minutes per week. If all you did were to go for a walk, preferably a brisk walk, 40 minutes a day, and 5 days a week, you would be one of the fittest people in the world. 

If you disciplined yourself to ride an exercise bicycle or workout on a treadmill, swim, jog or engage in any aerobic exercise which gets your lungs and heart pumping, your levels of health and energy will drastically improve in a short period.

Sleep well

The next habit that you need for excellent all-round health and complete state of well-being is the habit of proper rest. At the very least, you need up to 6 hours of sleep each night for optimal performance. If you get less than 7 or 6 hours of sleep at night, and you continue to work as hard as you usually would, you will eventually develop what is called sleep deficiency disorder.

You can change your performance, your efficiency at work, and your personal life by only developing a habit of going to bed early, by say, 10 o’clock every night and getting quality sleep every night of the week.

Quit bad habits

If you want to live long, there are some habits you need to let go of. Extreme habits like excessive alcohol drinking and heavy smoking should be cut off completely.

Excessive intake of alcohol puts the liver to work overtime. In the process of trying to break down the alcohol, certain toxins are created that are even deadlier than the alcohol itself. These toxins affect the liver and can cause diseases such as hepatitis, which is an inflammation of the liver, and cirrhosis, which is the scarring of the liver. 

Asides the adverse side effects alcohol has on the liver, an excessive intake of it has been shown to deteriorate the potency of the immune system. Once the immune system is weak, it cannot do the proper job of warding off deadly diseases that can shorten your life expectancy.

According to the United States National Institute of Health, tobacco consumption accounts for about 5.4 million deaths per year, and that close to 1 billion people will die in this century from heavy smoking if tobacco consumption rate keeps going as it is.

Stay active

We have talked about exercise earlier, that is a form of staying active. Here, the premise is to stay active overall. 

Mental and physical activities keep your body and mind sharp, thereby increasing your chances of fighting against infections and diseases.

As a matter of fact, the Harvard longevity project found that those who had satisfying careers and work until their 70s made it to even older ages.
