How to Accept Love When It's Offered to You
Is it hard for you to accept love even when you know it is being offered sincerely?
Do you find it difficult to believe that anyone can truly care for you, or that you are worthy of such love?
Nearly all of us try keep up a front. We like to give the impression that we are strong, confident, in control, managing our lives okay, and generally don't need anybody, thank you very much. But inside, we are all much softer and more vulnerable than we may appear. We long for acceptance and love, and rejection cuts very deep. Sometimes so deeply that we resolve never to expose ourselves to the risk of it again.
That's when we put up walls.
If you never let anyone in, never let them come close, they can't possibly hurt you, can they?
Refusing love because you're 'not worthy'
Sometimes we put up a barrier because we have concluded that we are not 'lovable', or 'not worthy of love'. We tell ourselves, and even believe, that the barrier is there to protect the people outside, to guard against them finding out the truth of our awfulness.
When you examine this belief, it becomes clear that this concept of 'unlovableness' or 'unworthiness' isn't based on any specific concrete evidence. It is itself based on rejection. Rejection that hurt so much that it had to be 'rationalized'. And the most popular rationalization, because the alternative is unthinkable, is: "I must be unlovable". So we push people away, no matter how genuine their care for us.
It doesn't have to be this way. No matter how long you have lived according to this pattern, you can reconnect with your innate capacity to love and be loved.
