Outdoor High Adventure Tips for Beginners

Every day, more and more people are looking to the outdoors to find peace, tranquility, and adventure. Nature provides a wealth of free activities and beautiful sceneries, something that the city life just can't offer. If you are ready to take the leap and get lost in the wilderness, you'll need to make sure you are thoroughly prepared. Here are a few tips for beginners getting ready for their first high adventure experience.

Don't Go Alone

This is a cardinal rule for any beginner adventurer. You should never, ever take off into nature alone. It's even better if you can pair up with someone who has a lot of experience. Hiking ranks third place for outdoor activity injuries, just behind snowboarding and sledding.

Map Out Your Route

You can still have an adventurous time while beginning with the end in mind. Map out your route before you go to make sure the following topics and risks are covered:

  • Fitness Level
    If you aren't very active, it's best to stick to a route that isn't going to be too difficult. You can always work your way up to more challenging hikes or bike routes.
  • Time
    If you aren't equipped to be hiking after dark, you should make sure you aren't taking a route that is going to keep you up in the mountains with no flashlight, shelter, or food. Decide on how much time you have and then plan accordingly.
  • Elevation
    The great outdoors is often full of ups and downs, and hikers who don't have a lot of experience with elevation gains can find themselves in over their heads. Planning out your hike to fit your experience level is crucial to your safety.
  • Distance
    This ties back into fitness level and time because you don't want to take on more distance than what you can handle or what you can do before dark.
  • Weather
    Check the forecast, you don't want to be hiking in high areas of the mountains and find yourself caught in a storm. Don't start hiking if bad weather is on the horizons.

Pack the Essentials

You don't want to overpack before you head out, but you also don't want to leave out the essentials. Statistics show that around half of all litter is cigarette butts, and these are not something you want to be bringing into the beautiful outdoors. Packing all of your smokeless tobacco is a great idea so grab your vape box mod over that pack of cigarettes. Here are a few essentials that you will want to bring with you:

  • Extra Clothes
    You will want to bring plenty of layers so you can take some off when it gets too warm and put some on when the air starts to cool. Bring base clothes, such as a tank top, and a sweater, jacket, rain coat, hiking boots, and long pants.
  • Tent
    If you plan on camping overnight, be sure to bring a tent to keep out bugs. Look for a tent that is specific to backpacking to avoid the weight of a traditional tent.
  • Sleeping Bag
    A lightweight sleeping bag is important for keeping warm on cool nights. Make sure the one that you take is waterproof and is also appropriate for the weather you will be hiking in.
  • Food
    The type of food you bring is going to depend on your preference. You can bring fresh ingredients for a full meal and cook it over the fire, or you can take freeze dried meals and cook them in boiling water.
