By Mikkie Mills

Life can be a big blurred mixture of work and home. Add in other worries and you are likely to be on edge. The stress that comes with these daily factors can take a toll on your mental state, causing a depressed mood.

According to the American Psychological Association, the majority of stress is caused by work, money, crime and politics. To experience these worries day-to-day, it’s no wonder you might feel stressed and emotionally deflated.

Stress affects everyone and how each person handles it is different. Stress can make a major impact on how you feel and coping strategies are not easily learned by some people. By thinking positively and trying new things, you’re sure to create a change in your mood.

Leisure Time

Participating in leisure activities can elevate your daily mood. Researchers were able to positively associate leisure time with daily mental and physical well-being. By adopting hobbies outside of work, you'll relieve stress and become happier.

Another study from Ohio State University determined that individuals who were voluntarily involved in leisure activities were shown to have positive emotions. Away from work, they were less depressed and showed improved physical markers like lower blood pressure.

The activities that have shown to improve daily mood is participating in sports, picking up hobbies and joining clubs. These can be done with others are alone, including spending time or eating with others or unwinding alone.

Meditation and Yoga

Meditation and yoga each come with mental health benefits. While these activities can be added to the section above, they deserve a section on their own. When added to your daily routine, you'll improve your mental well-being.

Yoga includes breathing, positions (Asanas) and meditation. Studies show that yoga can improve mood, reduce stress and depression as well as create inner calm. It also encourages better circulation which improves the function of your brain, which can encourage better mood when practiced daily.

Meditation on its own is also powerful in creating a better mood. It is also shown to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Starting out with as little as ten minutes a day can give you better mental clarity and stronger control over your thinking, which can lead to an elevated mood.

Positive Thinking

Your perspective influences your mood. And this is where the power of positivity plays a major role. You can modify your emotional state by using methods to increase positive thoughts and eliminating negative self-talk.

The way you think shapes how you feel and the way you perceive your surroundings. Negative self-talk can create a depressed mood and influence how you see the world. By thinking positively, you will develop a happier state and a better functioning brain.

To become a positive thinker, try reframing your thoughts on difficult situations like failures and setbacks. With a better perspective, you will be able to cope with the problem and avoid potential stress associated with a negative experience.

Starting the day with positive affirmations can also boost your daily mood. How you think can improve how you feel and how you see yourself. Practicing daily affirmations that are specific to you can increase the effectiveness of its mood-boosting potential.

Therapy, Patience and Practice

When you can’t improve your mood on your own, it might be best to seek professional help. Therapy can give you the guidance you need to improve your mood and cope with the stresses of daily life.

Therapists can give you tools to manage your mental wellbeing. The benefit is that when you talk to them, they can learn what works best for you. While you won’t see immediate results, you’ll develop a plan and learn how to elevate your mood with each session.

Happiness doesn’t happen quickly but takes time and effort. Finding the right fit for you is a personal journey that involves trial and error. If one isn’t the right fit, try the next method. For some, a combination of these things will be key.

There are solutions that you can use to elevate your mood. It’s a step-by-step process. By adopting new habits that are focused on emotional well-being, you can create your own happiness each day.
