Happiness is Enjoying the Little Things in Life


When someone asks us about the things we look forward to or aspire to, we usually think of something big. It can be an important occasion such as graduating from college or taking that much-anticipated summer vacation. It can also be a major goal we hope to reach one day such as buying a house. While these are all great life goals to aspire to, they often overshadow the simple pleasures in life.

Think about it: What’s the thing that makes your days brighter and more beautiful? What’s the thing that makes you smile and feel grateful for being alive? Chances are, it’s often the little things that make our days. They don’t cost anything, yet they bring so much joy into our lives. We smile when we recall them, and they give us courage, strength, and hope for the days ahead. While they may seem small, when we look back, we often realize that they were, indeed, big things that really made a difference.

Slow down and take time to enjoy the little things

Many of us spend our days rushing through our hectic schedules and focusing on the things we need to do. Add to that the fact that the media is constantly bombarding us with negative news and the things we don’t but “should” have, and you realize our tendency to zero in on the negative things every single day.

Think about how different our days would be if we just took a moment to slow down and appreciate the little things. It can be anything – a bright blue sky, a beautiful flower, or the crisp morning air. If you own a pet, it could mean taking the time to play and cuddle with them. If you have kids, it could mean playing a board game or throwing a family movie night. Take the time to appreciate and enjoy these moments, and be grateful for them.

Keep only the things that bring blessing and comfort


Enjoying the little things in life is also about sharing what you’ve got and being thankful for it. It’s about counting your blessings every single day and cherishing the comforts in your home. Take the time to go through your items and get rid of any needless stuff. This could be something you don’t need, use, or find beautiful.

Even if you do find something beautiful, if you don’t have room for it, try to let it go. Give that beautiful decor piece to a friend, family member, or someone else who will appreciate its beauty. You can also donate furniture that makes your home feel overcrowded and let someone else make good use of it. Not only will you free up some space but you’ll also help someone in need and benefit the environment. Focus on the things that bring blessing and comfort in your life, and keep your home tidy and organized.

Start your days earlier

Many of us groan at the idea of getting up earlier than we usually do. While you may enjoy getting those extra 15 minutes of sleep, give it a try. Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier than usual and resist the temptation of hitting the snooze button.

Take advantage of the early hours in the day while everyone’s still asleep to start your day off slowly and calmly. Focus on the sensations you’re experiencing that you otherwise wouldn’t. When you go to bed, take a moment to appreciate the things that made you smile that day. Small changes like these will help you slow down and shift your focus on the things that really matter.

Spend more time in nature

Nowadays, we’re spending more time indoors than ever before. What we don’t realize is, we’re missing out on so many things that could make our days happy and fulfilling. Natural world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered. The one way to do it is to get out there and spend some time soaking in everything Mother Nature has to offer.

Go for a walk when the weather allows. Pack your camping gear and spend the night stargazing with your friends or a loved one. If you live in a house, try your hand at gardening and reap all the amazing mental health benefits it offers. As long as it helps you reconnect with nature, anything goes.
