How to Change How You Feel
When you're not happy with the way you feel, it's easy to get caught up in an archaeological dig for the reason why. But I've found that using solution focussed tactics to deliberately change your feelings is a much more effective solution than rumination.
To show you what I mean, here are 3 steps you can take to feel better...
- Identify the passing emotional state you want to change
If it's a serious situation that should be addressed, then of course pay close attention to your needs and seek help if necessary. But if you recognize it as a temporary feeling that just needs a helping hand to pass by, then you've already taken the first step to making that happen.
- Decide how you want to feel
Now that you've pinpointed the feeling, instead of searching for the cause, which only digs you deeper into the feeling, decide how you want to be feeling instead. That way you have a positive solution to work towards.
- Recall times when you felt that way
Try to think of a point in your life when you experienced the emotional state you are seeking now. The remembered emotional state will give you a point of reference, both showing you that this feeling is possible, and evoking it in your mind.
