Golden Rules That Help You Accomplish Your Goals

By Zohair Sharif

“You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You should remember these mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time.” - Johnny Cash

Every individual of this society has some goals. These can be short term or long term goals. Whatever the goal type is you need to strive hard to accomplish your goal. Englishman Alec Mace came up with the idea of goal setting almost 80 years back. It has been found out that through this idea people were able to achieve more than what they have decided.

As goals vary with individuals so does the time of goal setting, but a research reveals that if goals are set by January 15th of a new year 92% of the people fail to even continue them. Following are the five golden rules that help you accomplish your goals successfully. If you follow these while setting up your goals, then you will definitely end up with real positive results.

1. Specific, realistic goals work best.
The first and the foremost thing that you need to care about is that you need to make specific and realistic goals. The reason behind this philosophy is that these type of goals are easy to accomplish. For example, if you set a goal to lose weight then you need to be realistic about your approach.

2. It takes time for a change to become an established habit.
You need to give yourself time to change your habit. If you want to establish a habit of morning walk, then you need to give yourself time to change your habit of waking up early. The reason behind this logic is that your brain needs time to adjust so enforcing it upon you might result in giving up the goal.

3. Repeating a goal makes it stick.
Yes, it really helps. If you speak out your goal daily in the morning, then you’ll definitely end up on the accomplished side. Every time you remind yourself about your goal you're training your brain to make it happen. If you do not feel good by speaking out loud about your goals as you do not want anyone to get know about it, then the best way is to write it down and read it daily. This will help to serve the same purpose,

4. Pleasing other people doesn't work.
Set only those goals that you want to accomplish. Do not add that goals in your goal list that your girlfriend, wife, or parents wants you to accomplish. It will be harder to stay on track and motivated if you're doing something out of obligation with someone else.

5. Roadblocks don't mean failure.
If you have an easy path to accomplish your goal that means that you haven’t either achieved it completely or that wasn’t your actual goal. While accomplishing something you will definitely fail but you have to keep one thing in mind - that the failure doesn’t mean that you can’t go ahead. The failure just means that you need much more effort than before.

If you follow the following things, then you make sure that you are going to be successful at the end of the day. The following factors are explained with help of some quotes from some famous people like J.K Rowling, Zig Ziglar and Charles Dickens so that it acts as a motivational factor if you are down and out while accomplishing your goal.

1. The way you bounce back
“It’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce that counts.” - Zig Ziglar.

It might be easy to say that you can rise from your failure but it’s really hard to apply in the real world. The realities of the world are unforgiving and harsh. But this is actually true your success is defined by how do you bounce back from the hole of failure that you have dug yourself into.

2. How do you treat your failures?
You might feel down when you first failed accomplishing your goal. You just don’t worry and try harder than the last time because the little more effort might help you achieve what you want. According to some very accomplished and famous people failure has a much vital role in accomplishing your goals. J.K Rowling a famous fiction writer told the importance of failure in life. Her words are as follows.

“Failure is so important. But the problem is that we want success all the time. But we don’t remember that it is failure and the milestones that help you to lead to greatest success. I’ve met people who don’t want to try for fear of failing.” - J.K. Rowling.

3. Your determination is going to define how far are going to go in accomplishing your goals.
Determination is another factor that is also required in accomplishing your goals. If you are not determined, then you might not be able to achieve your goals. Your determination is going to define how far are you going to go to achieve your goal. You will definitely face a lot of hurdles while accomplishing your goals and determination will play a key role in helping you accomplish the goals. For example, if you want to lose weight and you are not determined in achieving that goal then it might result in failure.
