The Importance of Time Management Skills

By Jeffrey Howard

The importance of time management has grown in the last couple of decades, as we now, more than ever, have so many distractions that can ruin the plans that we have made for the day.

The TV, Internet and the various social and other obligations that we have are all vying for our attention and being able to resist them in order to manage our time effectively and get our work done has never been so difficult, as it is now. Now we’re wasting our time on selfie with the Brooklyn Dodgers hat at the stadium, innit?

These days, not only have we got too many distractions that get in the way of getting our job done, but we also have too many choices of how to get the job done and this can be a great impediment itself.

The two main culprits working against effective time management

  1. Distractions
Distractions are everywhere around us. Most of the time, the most costly distractions appear to be of technological nature. While trying to work, we might find ourselves browsing Facebook, Twitter and other social networks, reading forums and blogs, playing games in our computers, smartphones or tablets, reading and responding to emails. Those things should be done after we manage to complete our tasks for the day, so that we can eliminate the feeling of guilt if we postpone our work for them. If we actually do those activities after we finish our tasks for the day, then we can get true enjoyment for doing them, instead of guilt.
  2. Procrastination
Procrastination is the other major culprit that is responsible for making us waste loads of our time doing everything else apart from the thing that we are supposed to do. Procrastination is the indecision to do a task and allows our mind to search to find a million other ways to change our priorities in our minds, so that we postpone the task at hand. After procrastination comes up, the distractions appear. You can take a look at the post that explains how to stop procrastinating.

The Importance Of Time Management

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but some people seem to be able to get everything they want done in their day, while others feel that 24 hours is nowhere near enough.

Why time management is important:

  • We have more time to ourselves – That is obvious. When we manage time properly, we then free any remaining time to do things that we enjoy, such as spend time with family and friends, take a walk in the park, exercise and educate ourselves.
  • We build self-discipline – To manage time properly, we inevitably need to build self-discipline if we don’t already have it. With self-discipline, we can make sure that the tasks that we have set, along with the deadlines, will be met and we won’t let ourselves be sidetracked from our goals. Self-discipline is a positive side effect of following effective time management practices.
  • Our time is limited – Our time is limited and we can never get it back, so we need to make sure that we make the most out of it. If there is one thing that we cannot afford wasting, that would be time. If we waste money, we can get them back one way or another. But once time is gone, it’s gone for good, never to return again.
  • We get to keep our health – Not being able to finish the tasks and meet the deadlines that we have set for the day can lead to feelings of shame, regret, stress and worry for not taking action. This puts even more pressure to us, as we need to make up for the lost time today in another day and that can cause anxiety, which can in turn make you lose your sleep, which in turn will sap your energy, make your health deteriorate and the vicious cycle goes on and on.

I am sure you can see the importance of time management in our lives. We need to make the most of our time so that we can devote our free time to our loved ones and to ourselves, to be able to follow our passions and to be able to fight to make our dreams come true. Without having this invaluable source called time, none of the above would be possible, so we have to make sure we don’t waste our valuable time and take control of the present moment.
