9 Ways To Quiet Your Mind
When You Are Overly Stressed

By Catrin Cooper

Finding peace in this world can be difficult. With economic pressures, technology, work, and family, it’s impossible to find our natural balance while being on top of everything.

But we all know that this overload can lead to fear, depression, and anxiety.

However, you can still quiet your mind through meditation. It’s the quickest way to find your inner peace when you’re overly stressed.

Being mindful doesn't mean you stop thinking. Rather, it means that you’re surpassing it and not suppressing it.

The key here is learning how to react to your thoughts and not finding an emotional attachment to them. To practice it, make sure that you commit to it daily.

Just eight minutes of meditation can have a significant effect on your well-being. By practicing it, you can survive any stressful job or task.

Get a hobby
Do something you love. It can be knitting, crocheting, baking, etc. Immerse yourself in it. Doing so will help you quiet your mind.

Becoming involved in it can turn off the background noise as you concentrate on the moment. Psychologists refer to it as experiencing flow.

In here, you get to lose your mind chatter. It’s one of the reasons hobbies can revive us because they can bring us to the present moment.

Turn off the noise
When was the last time you were in a quiet environment or be surrounded by a natural sound?

While at home, you can shut down the TV or radio to avoid the background noise.

When you’re driving, try to disable the radio or stereo so you can drive without too much noise.

Removing the unnecessary noise will make yourself calm and still.

Or you can run or walk in nature without the use of headphones. Instead of escaping the moment, concentrate on your surrounding to avoid filling your mind with information that you don’t need at that moment.

Keep in mind that an exercise is also a form of active meditation. Although your mind can wander, you can bring it back by trying to concentrate on what’s around you so you can quiet your thoughts while you’re moving.

Don’t use technology
One of the reasons we’re stressed out is that we fill our lives full of stuff. We stimulate our brand through technology, and it’s not useful.

Social media is one of the biggest time wasters. When you scroll down and read other people’s updates mindlessly, you’re not giving your mind a chance to be quiet.

That said, it’s best to take a time out. When you’re overly stressed, just turn off your phone or computer so you can force yourself to stay off social media.

By removing the technology, you can now start quieting your mind so you can concentrate on the task at hand.

Smile and laugh
It works on spiritual, physical and psychological levels. The feeling it gives is refreshing.

Focus on it as it can spread with every breath. It lifts your spirit up.

Laughing is also an old-fashioned way to quiet your mind while igniting your soul. It doesn't only make you feel good, but it also lightens your mood.

It’s a natural medicine that fills your heart with so much joy. By bringing happiness to your life while you’re stressed out, you can concentrate on your heart and share it with the people around you.

Say thank you three times
Saying thank you and feel those words can help in refocusing your busy mind. It also ignites your heart, allowing you to realize that you’re still alive and that’s worthy enough of giving thanks.

It’s a powerful way to put everything in perspective so you can start connecting to your heart.

Cancel dark thoughts
Each time your mind starts to tell you that you can’t finish the task, cancel it and say the word “cancel” out loud. It stops your destructive thoughts so that they won’t grow into giant thoughts.

You can quiet your mind by focusing on your breathing. Practice it every day as it offers long-lasting benefits.

Each time you feel stressed, focus on your breathing. It becomes your life preserver while you deal with stressful situations.

It’ll help you relax and not to overreact. By breathing, you’re taking in oxygen, which is good for you body and mind.

Record your voice
Sometimes, all we need is a reassurance from ourselves that everything’s going to be okay. Start making a voice recording of yourself so you can listen to it when your negative self starts to dominate.

In your voice recording, speak only words of encouragement. Listen to it, even when you’re not overly stressed.

Use your imagination
It’s true that you can’t change your current situation. However, you can always imagine a different scenario.

The process of imagining is productive as it makes some changes in your life. Keep in mind that our brain doesn’t know the difference between real and imagined experiences.

Use that to your advantage and harness the imagination’s power to soothe your mind when anxiety strikes.
