You are either one or the other. Either you approach life in a timid, careful, possibly even frightened approach which ultimately will stop you living out your passions and your dreams or either you believe in yourself and your dreams and you will stop at nothing to achieve them.
These are two opposing thought processes commonly referred to as mindsets. Since the term was coined, there have been two various mindsets that have been used to classify individuals, these are a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
Leona Palmer, a research scientist who also writes research papers for Academized, explains, “A fixed mindset and a growth mindset are two completely opposite frames of mind in which we as people live our day to day lives. A fixed mindset individual believes that the skills they possess including their talents and their IQ are fixed from birth and that they will live their life according to these talents and skill sets”.
Palmer continues, stating, “A growth mindset is a frame of mind in which the individual believes that their skills, talents and levels of intelligence can be developed through training and over the course of time. These individuals believe that learning and effort are the keys to unlocking their minds full potential which will, in turn, allow them to live their dreams and follow their passions”.
There are numerous habits that you can adopt to transform your mind into a growth mindset, the rewarding mindset that can drive you forward to achieve what you want to achieve in your life.
Having a growth mindset means that, as individuals, we need to accept that we are responsible for the events that happen in our lives. Granted, there are some aspects that are out of control but, when it comes to opportunities and day to day interactions, we are the only ones that are responsible for the consequences.
By not taking responsibility for your actions, you are instantly dismissing any kind of personal repercussion for the future events that you witness and over time, will begin to not put in any effort into your day to day activities, believing that things will happen if they are meant to happen.
Following on from the first tip, by taking control of our lives, we are becoming responsible for how we manage every single second of every single day. By adopting a growth mindset, time is a thing of the past as each new day can be treated as a new opportunity to make things happen. This, in turn, makes us more productive alongside a more positive attitude and more accepting of new challenges that can help us achieve our dreams.
Justin Stokes, a writer for Australian Help, exclaims, “I worked out that if the average individual lives to be 80 years old, they will be alive on the planet around 30,000 days. This means that individual has 30,000 opportunities to reach their dreams and become the person they want to be. They have 30,000 chances to follow their passions and 30,000 chances to live the life they want to live”.
Individuals with a fixed mindset are the types of people who will approach situations or events and watch from the side. It doesn't matter whether you're in a work environment, a social environment or any situation you could possibly find yourself in, by adopting a growth mindset, you'll be much more open to opportunities, enabling you to get involved and face challenges head on.
A great example of this is a football game. You can stand on the sidelines and observe the game, rooting for your favorite team to win and if they do, you can feel proud of them. However, this feeling is nothing compared to the players themselves that worked hard to achieve that victory and the feelings they get from winning are tenfold what the spectators feel. Which feeling would rather be feeling?
This concept can be applied to every aspect of your life but most importantly, growth mindset individuals realize the impact they have on others. Are the words that you use to people around you, in whatever situation you find yourself in, positive ones? Do they enable those individuals to feel inspired, motivated and able to achieve their dreams? If not, why not? By focusing on even a simple thing like the words you use in everyday life, you can not only change the lives of others, but you are also empowering yourself.
Many successful people, such as business entrepreneurs or motivating speeches can spend hours and hours perfecting their speeches which ensure they are reaching the people they want to connect with in the right way, enabling them to change their audience’s lives for the better.
Speaking can actually be quite a difficult art to master so it's worth practicing when you can find the time, allowing you to explain your vocabulary which will reward you in deeper connections with people and new opportunities. It's well worth practicing this concept of speaking and writing, even if you are just writing things down. Improving any of those skills and more can help you broaden your horizons and step out of your comfort zone towards a growth mindset lifestyle.
