Do You Need Gun Liability Insurance?
Gun ownership is a right in the United States. Just like many of our rights, it comes with a degree of risk and responsibility. Each year, 500 people die from unintentional firearm injuries. Over a third of nonfatal firearm injuries are unintentional.
Most of these shootings are preventable: a quarter of unintentional gun deaths involved alcohol. Almost a third of unintended gun deaths had a child as the shooter. Storing firearms securely can prevent many of these tragedies from ever occurring. Gun liability insurance encourages safe storage practices by lowering premiums on those who practice it. Gun safes and child-proof trigger locks are simple additions that can save both money and lives.
Some homeowner insurance or renters policies include firearm coverage. These policies typically cover theft, loss, and liability in accidental shooting situations with legally owned and reported firearms. Intentional harm and unreported guns are not covered by these policies.
