The Pineal Gland and Psychic Abilities

By Sarah Roberts

The Pineal Gland is one of the most important and mysterious organs in the human body. It plays and important role in regulating our health, and for thousands of years has been associated with human spirituality and psychic ability as the ‘third eye’.

Where is the Pineal Gland?

The pea-sized gland, which is shaped like a pinecone, resides in the centre of the brain, level with the space just above and between our eyebrows, the area of our third eye or Ajna chakra. It sits beneath the cerebral cortex, where the two hemispheres of the brain meet, in the place where the brain regulates consciousness and interprets the body’s senses.

What does the Pineal Gland do?

An endocrine gland, the Pineal produces Melatonin, which manages our circadian rhythms. Melatonin regulates our sleep and its quality, as well as the onset of puberty. Melatonin also fights against free radicals in the body, and it is a decline in Melatonin that triggers the aging process in the body. Serotonin, the happy chemical, is also transformed into Melatonin by the Pineal Gland.

The Science for the Third Eye

Scientific evidence suggests that the Pineal Gland once functioned as a kind of eye. This is because the Pineal is made up of cells that have the same features as the light sensitive cells found in our retinas, and because the Pineal receives signals that travel down the optic nerve. This indicates that the Pineal may have acted as some kind of eye before the current eye organ developed. It is now thought to contribute significantly to how we interpret the world around us based in the input from our senses.

Why might our Third Eye be blocked?

As children our Pineal Gland works much harder and is significantly larger. The shrinkage of the Pineal Gland in adults is often connected to the loss of spiritual awareness that many suffer as they grow older. The Pineal Gland of adults are also often calcified, predominantly due to ingesting toxins, in particular fluoride.

This blockage of the third eye is thought to be a strong cause of negative emotions, and that those with an uncalcified, open Pineal Gland are generally happier, as well as having more enhanced psychic abilities.

Caring for your Pineal Gland

There are steps that you can take to both prevent further physical damage to your Pineal Gland, and reverse some of the damage that has already been done – the body has an amazing ability to heal itself.

First, while the Pineal Gland regulates sleep, regulating your own sleep is also good for your Pineal gland. Avoid television, the light of mobile phones and other smart devices, and alcohol in the hours before you sleep, as these all interfere with the Pineal’s ability to function properly.

Reduce the number of chemicals in your diet, both by choosing chemical free foods, and making sure that your cooking utensils aren’t leaving a chemical coating on your food – avoid non-stick pans. You should also find a fluoride free toothpaste alternative, and check if you live in an area where fluoride is added to the water; if you do, get a filter.

In terms of reversing the damage already done, adding chlorella, spirulina and wheatgrass to your diet all help, as well as looking at an Iodine supplement as Iodine has strong decalcifying effects.

Exercising your Third Eye

As well as keeping your Pineal Gland healthy, you should be exercising your third eye, just like you would any other muscle, in order to improve its ability to do its job; in this case both producing Melatonin and enhancing your psychic abilities. To be able to perform a successful psychic reading, your pineal gland must be in good health.

The most fundamental way to exercise your third eye is through meditation. Essentially meditation is the practice of clearing your mind of active thought. Most meditations suggest focussing your attention on your breath to distract you from the thoughts that endlessly pop into you mind. If you want to exercise your third eye in particular, rather than focussing on your breath, focus on the region of your third eye. Imagine a closed eye there and focus on opening it and think about sending the energy of your brain to this spot. You will probably feel this part of your head tingling during and directly after the meditation.

Himalayan monks believe that this type of third eye meditation can be enhanced by conducting the meditation at sunrise, facing the sun with a silver coin covering the area of the third eye.

A yoga practice with a focus on inversions (head stands, hand stands and so forth) also stimulates the third eye by allowing the blood to flow to the brain.
