How Language Concepts Shape the Mind Map and Influence Personality

By Amanda Wilson

In linguistics, the idea that the language a person speaks can shape the way he or she thinks and influence their personality is one of the most intriguing concepts. Linguists, philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists and more questioned this concept.

At present, however, there is still no definitive answer if this is true. There are some evidences available that can help you understand the problem. As humans evolve, parts of their brain expand, so it has more computing power for understanding and learning more languages.

This is what makes people hardwired for communication. Throughout a person’s life, language can shape their mind map and influence their personalities. Evidence to this is most available to studies concerning bilingual people, which offer them benefits concerning complicated cognitive tasks.

In this article, you can learn the impact of language concepts to the way you think and your personality. Alongside useful learning online tools that help create best custom writing and online homework help, understanding the way you think will help improve your learning process.

The Language Concepts

Language concepts, also known as Cognitive Maps, refer to a mental picture or image of the attributes of your environment. The same thing allows you to give accurate directions to your friend who is in town to visit you even when you don’t have a map.

One thing to note about cognitive maps is people often omit information they feel is irrelevant. As such, most of the time a person’s cognitive map differs from the actual environment. Humans and animals, they both use cognitive mapping to recall the important features of their environment.

If you ask a person to sketch a map of a certain location, you can find out what features are salient for them are. There are two kinds of information that a cognitive map shows – what is important (features included in the cognitive map) and less important to them (features omitted in the cognitive map).

Cognitive Mapping as a Tool

There are many tools available today that help students in their study, such as tools that allow me to do my homework online. They are great tools in studying and passing an exam. However, if it is gathering information and understanding how the mind works, cognitive maps are a more powerful tool.

There are many ways that cognitive maps are useful. They provide powerful insight into our world, such as physical handicaps and sensory deficits. In the fields of architecture, community design and recreational planning, cognitive maps found practical use.

They are particularly useful research tool in learning your knowledge of your surroundings. In the fields of law enforcement, tourism, environmental psychology, recreation and other fields, you can use cognitive mapping.

It lets you determine if people know more or less about a place, if it is an undesirable or desirable location. More than providing insights about a physical environment, it is also useful for development of adult personality.

What Drives Adult Personality Development

A person’s personality changes throughout their whole life. There have been numerous studies about the causes and processes of the development of an adult’s personality. These studies show certain basic concepts related to adult personality development.

Most interesting of these basic concepts is the environmental factors. A person’s environment shows short-term or long-term influences that could have mutable or lasting impact to a person’s personality traits.

It all depends on the stability of the environment influenced by certain variables such as age and zeitgeist. This means that the effect of environment to personality development differs in age groups and other things that associate to one’s birth.

In addition, the person’s language also has an effect to a person’s concept map and personality. In studies, evidence shows that when you switch between two languages triggers different parts of the brain. It particularly triggers the part responsible for recalling and organizing information.

There is still no definitive answer as to how language concepts or concept mapping affect the mind and personality. However, many evidences show a strong connection between them. With more activities and studies, learning the influence between these concepts hopefully becomes clearer.
