Enthusiasm and Creativity: What Else Will You Need to Become a Successful Writer?

By Nicholas Walker

Writing is an art that is reserved for a few but with proper training you can master it. Many people wake up one day thinking they are writers already and people must admire their works. Oblivious of the fact that it can take years of practice to become a master. They only wake up to the reality after producing their work but fail to excite their readers.

Aspiring writers should know that apart from being enthusiastic and creative about writing, there are other technical skills that are required to succeed. You could be having ideas on what to write about but perhaps you don’t know where to start from. If you are stuck, there several online guides on how to write a good essay you can read, for instance you can browse this site for thesis paper examples and CV help. Nevertheless, here are some general English writing tips you can consider exploring...

1. Read and research widely

If you want to become a successful writer, then reading should become your habit as it is only by reading that you can master the art and turn words into your fuel. Read everything under the sun; be it fiction work or not, magazines, e-books, novels and other works and learn how other writers play with words to pass messages.

Through reading you will learn new vocabularies and improve your grammar. Reading widely is also good as it can also be a source of your new inspirations. To do this, a critical mind and catchy eyes are necessary so that you can decipher some hidden lessons.

2. Developing a catchy title

Once you decide to write about something then come up with a catchy title or one that will attract the reader. You could write very good content but people fail to read it. Studies have shown that most people don’t read the content if the title is not catchy or interesting.

So, to get them hooked, start your topic with a bang and thereafter keep them engaged by use of metaphors, similes and direct comparisons together with other stuff.

3. Use simple and concise language

Learn how to tell your story without using too many words. Be concise and direct to the point as long paragraphs are boring. If you have to use many words to make a point, then break your work into small paragraphs consisting of 2-3 small sentences.

Also avoid using hard and long vocabularies such that one will require a dictionary to read your work as will fail to pass the intended message to your targeted audience.

4. Overcoming writer’s block

If you are an experienced writer, then you must have experienced this situation. There comes a time in thesis writing or any other type of writing when one’s mind runs blank. You could be crafting a certain topic but then you ran out of ideas. The best thing to do is to take a short break so as to refresh your mind as sometimes this is indicative of tiredness.

If you experience writer’s block quite often, pick other interesting things to write about even if it means describing visual things in your room as in the process you will stimulate your mind into thinking deeper and get back into ‘writing-mode’.

5. Convey a message

Every topic you write about must convey a certain message or at least offer answers to a disturbing question and this is what thesis is all about. For example, when developing a thesis statement, you should include the topic you will be discussing and thereafter comment a little about your position on the issue. As you write, do not forget to guide readers through your work for them to get your arguments.

Your thesis statement should be placed in the 1st paragraph or in the 2nd if it is a long essay. In formulating your title, be clear and specific to your topic and you should avoid using vague and confusing words. Here are two examples of thesis statements:

  1. Despite timber wolves being gentle and timid animals, people have continued to exterminate them due to a misconception that they are fierce and a threat to humans.
  2. Statistics are used for explaining certain positions and since journalist’s work is to inform the public, they must seek to understand the significance of the statistical numbers they are reporting about.
