Why Sleep Should Be Every Student’s Priority

Academic tasks hardly ever leave some time off for a student, especially during exam time. In fact, students are among those who sleep the least, despite the fact that they need sleep to get through the day and finish everything on their to-do lists.

If you want to remember things, keep your focus on the things of importance, remain motivated and energized – you need sleep. There’s no alternative to it. Sleep importance for students is enormous and without a doubt, one of the most underestimated things among this group of people. As a result, we are looking at more and more students who are struggling with the negative effects of sleep deprivation.

What Happens Inside a Sleeper’s Brain

Scientists have invented a special machine that monitors the brain of a person who sleeps. The goal is to detect the activity in the brain with the help of electrodes that are directly placed on the subject’s head. This machine is called an electroencephalography machine.

Depending on where these electrodes are placed on the head, the results will show any existing activity in a specific brain region (temporal, frontal, or parietal), as well as eye movements and muscle tone movement.

With the help of this machine, scientists have discovered yet another value of sleep. The REM phase that’s also known as slow-wave sleep is very important for retaining memories and basically, learning the things the person has introduced to the brain before going to sleep.

That being said, sleeping isn’t only important for energy and increased concentration, but also for memory boost and actual retention of the information you need to remember.

Night Rhythms

Scientists have found a genetic component and basis to the internal clocks in people, as well as the number of sleep spindles a person has. The first tells us when to wake up and when to sleep. In order to adhere to such cycle, we need to reach a high cognitive performance.

According to Michael W Young, a Nobel Prize winner, claims that in order to function at an optimal level, whether it is in college or other area of life, you need to ‘recreate a rhythmic environment’. According to this expert, people whose lifestyle often results in sleep deprivation or sleep disorders need to use ‘tricks’ to place the brain in a rhythmic environment. For example, you should use bright lights during days and blackout curtains during nights.

That being said, in order to get through your education without torturing your body and brain, you need to also take power naps that will keep you alert and focused. Basically, if your brain struggles to retain the information you get from the books, it misses rest, just as the body misses it when you put it through a rough exercise.

Sleep Importance for Students

Sleep is extremely important for everyone, so why should students be any different? As we mentioned, students are a group of people who often have to go through sleep deprivation due to the increase in academic obligations or the tough deadlines. As a result, they often develop a sleep disorder that prevents them from providing the brain with the necessary rest to function properly.

Without a good night’s sleep, a student can’t focus on the important information, which means that he’ll struggle even more to learn the materials or write the tasks.

The Bottom Line

Students need their sleep. Most of them underestimate the importance sleep has on their health and academic success, which is why their grades suffer and their lives become unbearable. When it comes to sleep, this should be the priority of students. So, do whatever you can to set some time aside to rest your body and your brain. Hire an essay writing company for your written tasks, make a decent schedule that will allow some time for breaks and naps, and tackle those materials sooner so that you don’t have to study everything all at once.
