Breaking Ground: The Power of Heavy Equipment in Construction

Construction projects take time to plan. The contractor must lay every detail out to ensure the project runs smoothly from start to finish. In addition, during the planning stages, the contractor determines which equipment they will need when to complete tasks on time. What equipment might they need as part of a construction project?

Excavators

Contractors rely heavily on excavators. These machines come equipped with a cabin where the operator sits, a long arm, and a digging bucket. Columbus Equipment sells many of these machines because they are so useful.

Excavators come in two main types. Wheeled models are smaller, making them ideal for crowded construction sites. Tracked excavators are best for areas with uneven terrain. The main purpose of the machine is to dig. However, contractors use these machines for heavy lifting, river dredging, and hauling materials such as gravel on a job site.

Bulldozers

Bulldozers push materials around. The blade attached to the front of the machine is used to scrape and push soil. The operator raises and lowers the machine as needed, and the lower edge of the blade is sharp. This sharp edge is used to cut soil.

A contractor may use this machine to clear land, haul soil, or push soil and other materials. It is often called on for rough grading and to remove trees. It is a helpful machine to have on job sites because it can take on a variety of tasks with ease.

Grading Equipment

Many people think a bulldozer is used to level land, but a grader is actually called in to handle this task. The grader is more precise than the bulldozer, which is why it is essential for many job sites today. This machine comes equipped with a horizontal blade installed before a framework.

The operator lifts, tilts, rotates, and lowers the blade as needed to achieve a flat surface. In addition, workers may use a grader to remove snow from a job site, reclaim land, and more. Contractors must choose between towed graders and motor graders.

Scrapers

Scrapers also move soil, much like other machines do. The difference between this piece of equipment and others is the scraper deposits soil as it moves across the job site. It spreads the soil automatically. The scraper’s wheels also help to compact the soil as it is distributed, so workers only need one machine to dig, carry, and finish areas of the job site.

Backhoes

Backhoes are another machine used to move the earth on construction sites. This machine’s name comes from the digging mechanism, as it greatly resembles an everyday garden hoe. The operator lowers the bucket on the machine and drags it back toward the machine. When doing so, the bucket collects any soil and other items in its path. Backhoes are commonly used to dig trenches and they serve many other purposes on the site.

Dump Trucks

Dump trucks are commonly seen on construction sites and on local roadways. Contractors use these vehicles to transport materials from one location to another. Both locations may be on the same job site, or the dump truck operator might bring materials to a job site or remove them. Moving these materials is easy because the trucks come equipped with a hinged body and hydraulic ram. When the ram is operated, the front of the truck lifts up and tilts backward so the materials can be dumped in the desired location.

These are only a few of the many machines a person might encounter on a construction site. Without these machines, all jobs would need to be done manually, which adds to the time needed to complete the project and the money required to do so. People should appreciate the power of heavy equipment in construction today, as these machines make life easier for all.
