Molly was originally an Olympic skiing hopeful but ended up experiencing a training accident right before the 2002 Winter Olympics. This is where the movies starts off before unfolding the captivating story of high stakes celebrity poker. Molly decides to have a free year away from studying to be a lawyer and decides to take a job as a waitress at a trendy night bar club instead. This is where Molly meets Dean, a real estate professional, who gives her a shot as his office manager. Molly accepts but soon ends up helping him managing his underground poker ring. However, Dean’s poker establishment is no regular backroom affair as he brings in serious celebrities including movie stars, bankers, sports stars and other wealthy and big shot individuals.
Molly is far from being a poker player, however she makes her cash from player tips. As these poker games have a minimum buy-in of $250k or more, Molly’s cash in tips were huge as she knew how to keep the whales satisfied. However, there's a player by the name of ‘Player X’ who Molly seeks to impress. This player could attract even bigger investors or fish to the poker game.
After Dean learns that Molly makes more cash in tips than he expected, he makes the decision to let her go. Unfortunately for Dean it’s a bit too late as Molly organizes and runs a bigger and better celebrity poker gaming den on both coasts.
How Good is Molly’s Game?
Molly’s Game is great at showing the audience a world that they perhaps never imagined was actually possible. While not specifically naming names, it nevertheless hints at certain celebrities plaid in the movie. The movie is based on the bestseller of the same name and, in the book it’s eluded to that the A-list celebrities like Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio are actually named by Molly Bloom in the book while others identities have been kept confidential.
