By Mikkie Mills
Employers are always looking for ways to increase productivity and efficiency among its staff. They develop reward plans, recognition awards, promotions, and other similar techniques. One thing they may not think about is using data to make the employees more engaged and motivated. Data provides a way for the employee to tangibly see and understand the business and their impact on it. Employees will be able to embrace changes in the workplace today by understanding the data used to make decisions.
There are various ways to use data to make employees more motivated to work harder. Here are just a few...
- Performance Metrics
Using performance metrics in your company usually entails using a dashboard. This puts all the pertinent information in one place for employees to access it. It creates a snapshot of performance. The crucial facet of a dashboard is to make sure the plan is transparent and effectual. If you start off this kind of plan by trying to hide things or use a generic set of metrics, then it becomes useless. Different departments may need to be measured by different metrics. So, each department needs its own set of metrics that will be measured using data. These dashboards help employees see how they individually contribute to the company and that what they do is important and vital to the success of the company.
Using performance metrics will give the employees a greater sense of responsibility and create a feeling of psychological ownership. This feeling creates a bond between the company and the employee. It makes the employee have pride in the company, increases their desire to excel, and creates motivation. Employees react when they are faced with concrete feedback on their performance and that this feedback is compared against specific goals.
- Identify Stressed Employees
Using analytics and data allow a company to not only identify employees that are excelling, but also those that are struggling. This data can be used as a tool for management to take the opportunity to speak with these employees and find out what is behind their lack of motivation. Being able to show the employee hard data which shows they are struggling is an important aspect of employee motivation. The meeting between employee and manager may unearth insight into ideas and issues you may not have identified. Furthermore, the larger the company, the harder it is to identify stressed and struggling employees. But, with data, the problems are laid out right in front of you, making the process of motivating and engaging these employees much easier.
- Celebrating Achievements
Companies are always looking for a way to motivate their employees. Creating dashboards that contain date or data-driven information is a great way to accomplish this task. Different celebrations can be applied in different ways. There are date driven or milestone celebrations, like if someone has been at the company for 10 years. Additionally, individual and company-wide achievements should be recognized as well. Using a dashboard that puts the data in front of the employees helps them understand where they stand in terms of achievement in their department or in the company. This can inspire employees to increase productivity and motivate them to be at the top of the leaderboard. Sometimes, it is not enough to just give someone a token appreciation gift, they need the competition to drive them to work harder.
Using data to track performance and motivate employees may take a little time. Employers need to make sure they are measuring the appropriate metrics depending on the department. Data allows employers to get a clear picture of which employees are excelling and which might be struggling. This gives them the opportunity to intervene and create more engaged and motivated employees. Using data to identify milestones and achievements serves as a way to motivate employees because they are being recognized for their hard work and dedication. The goal is to create an engaged, motivated workforce that takes pride in their work and their company. This can increase productivity and revenue for any company.
