Rogue employees are a real problem. They might be embezzling money, falsifying expense reports, or even working as active security risks. They put a great deal of effort into covering their tracks, but these people are average individuals motivated by greed. As such, they're far easier to catch than the industrial saboteurs of popular imagination. If you want to find an employee who has gone rogue, it's important that you take the time to follow the tips below...

  • Look at the Resume
    Your search for rogue employees should start with potential hires. If there's a problem with a resume - including references - there's a good chance that you're looking at someone who could cause future problems for your business. If someone fails a background check or has a reference that doesn't check out, you're often better off losing that resume. After all, these early problems can be a major sign of things to come.
  • Keep an Eye Open
    It's simply amazing how effective being observant can be, especially if you work at a large company. Keeping your eye out for shady behaviors or changes in behavior patterns can be an effective way to spot employees who are going rogue. Employees who are engaging in large-scale problematic behavior often have a problem dealing with little things like receipts and expense reports. If you notice that someone is falsifying the little things, make sure to take a look and see how they are treating the things that are a bit more important.

    Your place of work likely already has technology in place to track employee time worked and possibly even employee locations. The best way to track down a rogue employee is to use the tools that are already at your disposal. Look for patterns in time tracking or discrepancies in logs to find out if an employee has decided to do something that's not authorized. These small systems are often overlooked by employees who have ambitious plans to do wrong.
  • Pay Attention to Social Media
    Social media accounts can be great for gathering information. It's amazing what people will brag about, especially when their profiles are open to public scrutiny. If you think an employee might be going rogue, checking out a social media profile might be the best way to gather evidence. Don't try to poke around locked accounts, but be aware that anything publicly accessible really is fair game.
