Worst Things to Include on Resumes

By Carol James

If you ask yourself a question "What not to include in a resume?" you are on the right way. Some applicants do not even care about the mistakes in the resumes and then wonder, why they always face the refusal.

Let us look into main mistakes the job seekers do in the application documents.

Small Details Matter

Such things as naming a job application as 'resume' or putting the date when you have written the document may seem benign but indeed they are one of the worst things to put on a resume.

The hirer will understand what kind of document he holds from the first sight at it. The only figures you have to include are the working period or education years. Naming the electronic file 'resume' is also not the best idea. Instead, you better state your second name to facilitate the search process for the hiring manager.

Personal Information

The applicants make a huge mistake when suppose, that writing about you is one of the most important things to include in a resume. All the hirer needs are your name and contact details such as phone number, email, and address. Your age, race, sexual orientation, marital status, having children, political affiliation do not interest the employer. If he needs such details, he would ask you about the issues on the interview.

Cover Letter

There are two principal problems - lack of information and oversupply of details. If you doubt that some information should be involved, you better not add it. It may be hard to keep the balance between those two points. The decision is usually a cover letter - a document, where you can write more detailed data.

Single Sample Resume

The generic resume for all the applied jobs never works. All the hirers create a list of skills and features, which they look for in the workers. So, you should build your resume in accordance with these keywords. Furthermore, the resumes for federal jobs usually have other requirements than ones for private companies. Thus, do not wonder, if the federal resume writers cost differs from the cost of writing the usual resume.

Size

Think twice, before asking a question "How many pages should a resume be?" Maximum two. Do not go into details. Mention the most important points of your career, education, and skills. Do not write an autobiography. Here's a guide to the perfect length of a resume.

The Lack of Information

Those students who recently graduated often do not know what to include in a resume, if any work experience is available. Thus, they write only about their personal skills and diplomas. In such cases, it is appropriate to include volunteering work if it is related to the applied position.

GPA

Students and graduates are concerned about the necessity of adding the GPA to the resume. If the GPA is low, you better avoid including it. But, if you wish, you can show your good results. However, you may be demanded to indicate your GPA if you write the resume for an internship.

Attention Drawing

It is essential to make the resume summary interesting. The major part of employers does read the summary. That is why the content should be bright and attractive, and mention the specific and relevant experiences.

Document Structure

In pursuit of creating a bright resume, a lot of applicants make it too busy and unreadable. For example, highlighting a resume header and forgetting about the content, adding useless photos and tables, avoiding necessary lists. To make the resume good-looking, show it to someone and ask what lines and paragraphs are remarkable, what things you should emphasize and what to eliminate.

Resume Objective

Actually, this point is the subject of discussion. But the general rule is not involving it to the application document. Rather than writing about your expectations regarding your prospect career, tell the hirer about your abilities and talents. Thus, the resume skills sections, career summary, branding statement are binding, as they show your skills and success in the recent jobs.

There are a lot of articles and pieces of advice on what are the best things to put on a resume. Unfortunately, there only a few those, which tell honestly about the pitfalls and obstacles, which the applicants meet while writing the resume. In this regard, hirers and job seekers contend with misunderstandings.

In short, the resume is the most important document, which should be built carefully to each position and job separately – the applicant has to decide which skills to include on resume, what accomplishments to mention, what document format to choose.

There is no perfect resume, as people opinions on how the perfect resume must look like differ a lot. You will never create a flawless application document, But you can polish your skills, correct the mistakes and improve the knowledge to achieve progress in resume writing.
