The Importance and Price of Motivation
in the Workplace
By Hannah Butler
We’ve all had that feeling on a Monday morning where we literally can’t get out of bed because the motivation to do another day, followed by another week which will probably lead to another month just is not there. For some this becomes an all too regular occurrence, in fact it is a feeling so common that it probably appears most days of the week, not just on the traditional Monday morning. That feeling of wanting to quit midweek comes round again and although you can’t quite put your finger on what is bugging you, you can put it down to motivation and these are a few reasons why motivation the workplace is very important.
Your Performance Counts
Now I don’t know what you do for a living but I’m willing to hazard a guess that dependent on what you do that day affects other people even if it is only in a small sense. If you’re not motivated, then how can you expect anyone on your team to be motivated? Getting a good solid performance out of all your employees/people you’re in charge of is one of the main reasons your paid money and if you don’t have that buzz, that sparkle that inspires the team then your whole department is going to suffer.
I’m not suggesting that everyone, everywhere enjoys every day of work, that would be insane. But most turn up every day ready to get the tasks that need to be done finished and you should do.
It Affects All Areas of Life
You may think that a work problem is just a work problem but that isn’t always the case. You’d be amazed how many times a work issue transpires across all areas of your life. If you’re not enjoying the majority of your day then chances are not going to be in the best of moods when it comes to doing things you actually enjoy like seeing your family, socializing or playing sports.
If you’re not enjoying your work, then you’re not enjoying the rest of your life to the fullest so bare that in mind.
You Can’t Get to Where You Want to Be Without It
Sounds harsh but that is the cold reality of it. If you have ambitions, if you have dreams and you have financial goals to attain then you can’t get anywhere near them without motivation in the workplace. As soon as you get into the habit of struggling to go into work and get things done every day your dreams are slowly but surely slipping away as these bad habits tend to stay with you for the rest of your life
What Will Motivation in The Workplace Cost You?
Okay, so we’ve already established that motivation in the workplace is very important and we’ve shown exactly what a lack of motivation can do to you, your life and your career. Now looking at the flip side we’re going to dive into the events that lead on from not really feeling like doing much work and how that is going to affect you in the long run. In the grand scheme of things a few off days, maybe a few off weeks isn’t going to affect you too much but if you pick up on bad habits you can bet your last dollar that it is going to cost you the following things.
Money
Money is not the be all and end all but it is really important. If you like holidays, if you like treating your family, if you like sleeping at night comfortably then you’ll need money in the bank and anyone that has a successful career will tell you that this is not really possible if you’re not correctly motivated to do the work.
Not having motivation in the workplace will cost you thousands and thousands of dollars in career earnings, it may be the difference between a nice retirement fund and a non-existent one. Of course we are talking about extreme ends of the spectrum here but the fear of losing out should be enough to motivate you back into consistently working hard.
Quality of Life
You’ve probably got friends who love their jobs and you probably never hear the end of it. Although irritating there is a lot to be envied about people who enjoy what they do for a living. Because they enjoy their work they’re able to enjoy a lot more of their day than the average person and obviously never have to deal with feeling down or a lack of motivation.
When your motivation in the workplace is suffering you are making yourself miserable by not having enough steam to get through the day without wanting/wishing for something else, something better. Therefore, your quality of life drops dramatically as you’re becoming more and more stressed about work which leads to more and more stress at home. If you’re not enjoying your work or you’re not motivated, then your suffering in more areas of your life than you’d care to imagine!
Success
As briefly touched upon in the Money section, success is not something you can achieve without desire and desire is closely related to Mr. Motivation in The Workplace. If you’re not motivated you’re potentially missing out on lots of interesting opportunities like promotions, business trips and even friendships with colleagues who are motivated.
The truth is that nobody wants to spend time with someone who is going to lower their spirit and this doesn’t ring any truer than in the workplace. Honestly, I can’t stress enough the importance of being motivated to be successful enough as it contributes towards all sorts of close relationships and the worst thing is you don’t even realize it!
