Famous Personalities Who Depended on Scholarships to Reach the Skies - Josh Gibson MD Scholarship

Scholarship

Students feel proud to earn a scholarship, especially if it is a prestigious one, as it bears testimony to their academic capabilities and, in some cases, can even point at their future career success. All eminent personalities in various academic fields have been the recipients of many kinds of scholarships not only during their student days but also later when advancing their careers. Students heavily rely on scholarships like the Josh Gibson MD Scholarship for funding their education right from the graduate level to post graduate studies and onwards until they acquire worldwide recognition in their respective fields.

Josh Gibson MD Scholarship – a great encouragement for undergraduate students

Scholarships have been integral to the education system across the world and particularly the US, where pursuing higher education is exorbitantly costly. Meritorious and deserving students who have the potential of becoming future leaders are often left out in the cold, as they are unable to arrange for finances to pursue higher education. Scholarships are grants which help students to bridge the financial gap for completing their education. Besides the money, scholarships are a great encouragement for students who feel more confident of delivering their best which is the best way of expressing their gratitude for the support.

Do scholarships in the early days point to future success?

Earning scholarships early in the career is not only a recognition of the potential of students but also a pointer about them making it big someday and become world renowned figures. Considering the huge importance that most people attach to the PSAT/ NMSQT scores, it clearly hints at the success that students can expect during their college education. However, there is the other group of people who consider PSAT as only a standardized competitive examination that is only a part of the students’ curriculum who want to do some self-test about their abilities.

There is no denying that success breeds success. The early success that students taste by earning some scholarships paves the path of success in the future. Leaving aside the debate about the truth in the statement, there are numerous scholarship recipients who have later turned into famous personalities in their respective fields.

Life stories of famous personalities prove the point

You need not search too much to find proof about the correctness of the statement that students who earn scholarships in the early days, even before entering college, are among some of the notable international personalities today. From Bill Gates to Jeffrey Bezos, from Manoj 'M.Night' Shyamalan to Stephanie Meyer, and from Steven A. Ballmer to Jerry Greenfield, just to name a few, the list can be so long that it would fill all the pages of this article.

However, this does not mean that you can rubbish the naysayers because there are numerous instances when students who showed sparks in the early days simply lost their way later in life. Well, life is about both success and failure but as we can learn a lot and feel inspired from success stories, let us examine the lives of the personalities mentioned above.

Bill Gates

Bill Gates wears many hats today and the erstwhile chairman of Microsoft, who played the role of a gamechanger during his early entrepreneurial days, is now a philanthropist and philosopher. He is championing the cause of the underprivileged, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is working to impart equal value in all lives by helping people lead healthy, productive lives.

His tenure with Microsoft turned him into the richest man in the world, and now he uses the immense wealth to spend heavily on philanthropy. Besides being one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, he is also an author and a technocrat par excellence. What he has become today was perhaps bound to happen when we look back at the marvelous start of his journey marked by winning the National Merit Scholarship in 1973.

Jeff Bezos

The founder, chairman, and CEO of the eCommerce behemoth Amazon is also a winner of the National Merit Scholarship in 1982.He has lived up to his reputation as a bright student who made it to the zenith by converting his modest entrepreneurial beginning to build an unthinkable business empire that does not have any parallel. He is among America’s best business leaders and in 1999 made it to the Time’s Person of the Year. Carnegie Mellon conferred on him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his incredible leadership.

Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer’s claim to fame was the astounding success of Twilight, a vampire romance series that simply swept her readers off their feet. The American novelist was pleasantly surprised to see her book sales cross 100 million copies as she ruled the American literary world by becoming the bestselling author in succession in 2008 and 2009. Stephenie continues with the literary pursuits and is a celebrity writer in her own right. She had won the Birmingham Young Merit Scholarship in 1992 at the age of 19 and has lived up to the expectations fully.

Steven A. Ballmer

Bill Gates abdicated the post of CEO of Microsoft in 2000 and chose Steven A. Ballmer as his successor. Incidentally, Ballmer, too, was a winner of the National Merit Scholarship in 1973. The same year Gates won it. Ballmer served the software giant until 2014 and is the current owner of Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association.

Jerry Greenfield

Ben and Jerry's that famously introduced the ice creams, yogurt, and sorbet flavors with queer names like Chubby Hubby, Chunky Monkey, Cherry Garcia, and Jamaican Me Crazy are household names in the US. The men behind it are Jerry Greenfield and his buddy Ben who launched the Vermont Company, which they later sold to Unilever to help the brand gain worldwide recognition. Jerry had it in him from the beginning and proved his mettle at an early age by winning the Bache Corporation Foundation Merit Award in 1969.

Although it hard to bet on every scholarship winner, but in many cases, the students who start it big do end up doing big things, as proven time and again.
