How to be Your Best Professional Self
The professional world can be a scary place. There is a lot of pressure to perform, make a certain amount of money all while balancing your personal, private, and public life. This is overwhelming and can start to eat at you and your confidence and self esteem. It can be especially hard if you feel like you can’t find a job and are stuck in interview after interview. This is so hard and can be so rough, but there is a silver lining for these situations. This gives you a great experience to improve your professional skills and make yourself a better job candidate and employee. Here are five things you can do to give your professional self a better tomorrow:
This is defined as being yourself without putting on a mask or trying to be something you are not. It means embracing your flaws and your strengths without judgment and knowing where and how you can improve.
You may not see how this can help you in your professional life. This has everything to do with your professional success and happiness. If you are not able to see who you are and figure out what you enjoy, you could end up in a job that makes you miserable. You could also become a person who is one person at work and a completely different person when you are at home with your family and friends. Authenticity allows you to have peace of mind within your life whether you are behind closed doors or presenting at a conference.
Take a minute and reflect on how you are doing. This includes how you are doing emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Are you getting enough sleep? How are you treating other people? Have you been proactive or are you just reacting to others? Consider these questions. You can reflect on a daily basis or weekly basis. Give yourself enough time to think about yourself and your interactions with others. Be 100% responsible and honest with yourself.
This is one of the hardest things to learn and is a process that takes a lifetime. Vulnerability and authenticity go hand in hand and are so important to your personal well-being. Being vulnerable means you show all of yourself, the good and the bad, when it is appropriate. It means that you as an employee know what you can do and what you cannot do. This means learning to say no and understand your limitations. Contrary to what society tells you, you can’t do everything which is totally okay. This will let you be more productive and effective while you work.
There comes a point where what you are doing and how you are doing it is not working. This means that you have to change how you do things. If you find yourself struggling with interviews or talking with your boss, you need to make positive changes. This means taking a look at yourself and seeing that you are not the smartest or strongest person and that you have places where you can improve. Start looking at interview articles and see what you can do differently. If you struggle with negotiations, consider negotiation training or some kind of professional help. There are therapists and professionals dedicated to making you a better professional.
There is no reason you should ever feel stuck in a job. You can always change your career or your job. This requires that you work hard and are willing to fail multiple times. The best of people have lost their jobs, failed interviews, and spend months finding a new job. This is all normal so do not lose hope. Keep your dreams close to you and do everything you can to make them come true.
