How to Improve Your Online Job Search

By Elliot Caleira

Back in the old days before the the internet was a thing, you used to have to look in the newspaper or go to the business itself and ask if they were hiring. When it comes to Online job searching, many people out of understandable desperation will just look for a place close to them and take the first thing they see that they qualify for. This is the wrong approach.

There are tons of websites today that can help you find a job, but you want to navigate carefully. Just applying randomly at jobs that are hiring via one of the websites isn't going to necessarily improve your chances. You should attend networking events and build a presence for yourself in person as well as online. Think about how many companies have an employee referral program. The more people you know, the more likely someone will remember you when it comes time to hire someone.

Search For Something Within Your Skill Level
If you've only had one job, you probably shouldn't apply to be a district manager. Staying in your skill level is another way to ensure a higher probability of getting hired. Not only that, but when you have a good record at a job of your skill level, promotion is probably going to happen at some point. If you are not satisfied with your company but enjoy that particular career field, look for websites that cater to your profession. Find a website that helps you find jobs in whatever your chosen field may be. Maybe you’re looking for physical therapist jobs, nursing jobs, or IT jobs. There might be a website out there that compiles all the jobs in your particular field. This can help naturally increase your skill level while building a solid resume since you will be able to find a job that matches the skills you already have while helping you develop new skills.

You Don't Have to Be a College Graduate
You might not be a college graduate, but you don't have to be. There are many entry-level jobs you can find without a college degree, and there are even many ways to make money online. Whether you’re a student or someone who decided not to pursue a college education, there are still a plethora of jobs available.

Make Sure Your Resume is Clear
Employers get a ton of applications, so you don't want to be long-winded. Look at your resume and make sure the important things stand out. Because there are a lot of people applying for the same position, make sure to point out what sets you apart from everyone else.

Don't Stress Yourself Out
Sometimes you have to take a break if you're stressing yourself out too much. Depending on your situation even taking a day off can change the way you look at the situation. Taking some time to clear your head can support a better emotional disposition as well as clearing your mind. Take a walk or drive, lay down and browse the internet, give yourself a break.

Back To the Start
Some jobs only offer paper applications or an online application that is found at their website only. Don’t be afraid of applying for jobs with these kinds of applications. Go to the company’s website and apply there, or go to the business physical location. This not only gives a more personal impression since you aren't going through a middleman, but it also will show your employer that perhaps you aren't just a person looking for a job, that you genuinely want to work at his business for whatever reason.

Conclusion
In summary, create a resume that isn't a novel, don't stress yourself out, search for your skill level and don't put yourself down just because you aren't college educated. Always do your research even if it leads you to filling out applications the old fashion way on a piece of paper inside the building. Follow these general guidelines and you should see improvement in your online job search.
