8 Simple Ways to Boost Your Career and
Love What You Do

Boost Your Career

The average person spends one-third of their life at work. When you consider this fact, it's vital to choose a career you truly enjoy and love.

If you're stuck in a job you hate, you simply aren't valued or you're earning less than you want, it might be time to make some changes. You have the power to improve your career so you can start enjoying your job.

Start by Setting Goals

"Goals are dreams with a deadline" - Napolean Hill. Setting goals for yourself is a means to fueling your ambition. It gives you purpose helps you to guide your life. But, goal setting isn't just about creating a life plan and holding yourself accountable, it's also about inspiring us to aim for things that seem impossible at first glance.

In order to excel in your career, you need to set clear goals of what it is you want to achieve...

Stop Procrastinating

Procrastination is merely a distraction from what's truly important. We tend to procrastinate when a task is challenging by filling our time with insignificant activities. We tell ourselves that we're getting something done when in actual fact we fail to rise to the challenge and complete the important task at hand.

When we put things off, we allow ourselves short-lived gratification instead of considering what's best for ourselves and our career.

Be Open to Constructive Criticism

Think of criticism as feedback. Try not to take offence if someone critiques you. That being said, there's a difference between bullying and productive criticism. If you reframe the feedback, you can take it and turn it into an advantage by viewing it from a positive perspective.

You can turn negative critique into a positive when you determine how to use it to make you a better employee. Recognising your flaws is vital so you can do the work to improve them and grow your career.

Network, Network, Network

Boost Your Career

We live in a society where it's not always WHAT you know but WHO you know. Professional networking is a valuable skill to develop because it can improve your career progression. Networking doesn't always have to be in a formal setting like networking events, it merely means interacting with other professionals and exchanging information that can help each other.

Credible and trustworthy connections are formed through networking and it also promotes interpersonal skills. The more you communicate with people in your profession, the more your confidence will grow, making it much more likely that you succeed in your career.

Expand Your Skills List

Just because you have a job doesn't mean you should stop expanding your skillset. And learning new skills are significantly easier these days with thousands of online courses available at affordable prices. Distance learning enables you to study at your own pace in your own time and can help expand your knowledge base. The more you know, the better your marketability. Plus, it shows you are motivated to boost your career.

Be a Leader, Not a Follower

Contrary to popular belief, leaders are made, not born. This means that anyone who is motivated and accepts the challenge can become a leader. There's nothing wrong with being a follower but being a follower won't boost your career.

The only boundaries in life are the ones you set yourself. You'll never live the life of your dreams without determination and hard work. You can start flexing your leadership muscles by being confident in your purpose. Great leaders are also empathetic, openminded and thick-skinned.

Get a Mentor or Life Coach

If you want to grow your career but you're not sure where to start, a good place would be to get a mentor or hire a life coach. Do you consider former coworkers or managers ideal candidates for a personal mentor? It's good to stay in touch with someone who can offer valuable career advice over a cup of coffee once in a while.

A life coach, on the other hand, can help you determine your goals and give you the necessary tools, advice and guidance to achieve them.

Don't Underestimate the Power of Downtime

You can't pour from an empty cup! To perform at your best, you need to take time to rest and refuel. Time away from work will give you a new perspective on which direction you need take towards a more fulfiling and satisfying career.

When you take the responsibility and put in the work to ensure you are as employable as possible, your chances of reaching any career goals you set triples. Consider the way you present yourself and put your energy into new opportunities and projects. Before you realise it, you'll land your dream job, have that promotion or start a successful business of your own.
