How to Be a Better Learner and
Spend Less Time Studying

The moment when you feel that you know enough about something is the moment you should snap out of it. Life is a continuous learning process and if you want to succeed in life, you have to keep an open mind and maintain a constant influx of new information.

Knowledge is power in just about anything. I like to remind myself that fact whenever I don’t feel motivated to get started on my learning. Still, getting started is only a small part of the “War on Laziness” as I like to call it.

What exactly are the elements needed for effective learning?

Well, there are a few cognitive concepts that play a key part in the learning process. Aside from the motivation to get started, you need to be focused so that you don’t drift away “into space”.

Of course, memory (both long-term and short-term) plays a key role when it comes to learning. Long-term memory is where the “data” is stored. Short-term memory is also essential for fast learning. Someone with a healthy short-term memory can read more without having to go back to previous pages. Proper sleep and nutrition are important to maintain both long-term and short-term memory

Last but not least, discipline is required. Learning is just like any other skill that gets better when practiced and gets rusty when abandoned.

Here are a few ways you can speed up your learning:

  • Use nootropics
Some nootropics boost memory, increase focus and will help you retain information faster. Coffee itself is a nootropic and one of the most popular drinks in the world. Supplements like Modafinil have been gaining widespread recognition over the years. The smart drug is hailed as "the closest thing to the Limitless pill". Still, some call it cheating while others call it ambition.

Regardless of your views and preconceived notions, nootropics have changed people’s lives for the best. There are many stories that you can read online of people who went from zero to hero after a brief period of using cognitive enhancers.

I remember a time a few years ago when I was going through a rough patch and could barely focus. Unfortunately, society (school, work and other priorities) generally cares little about personal issues that may hinder performance. Modafinil and Armodafinil (which I’ve bought from BuyXArmodafinil.org) have greatly helped my mind function at optimal levels during a period of intense lethargy and apathy.

  • View everything as a story
Stories are the easiest way to remember facts. It’s how information has been communicated for thousands of years until writing appeared. This helps you connect essential information to day to day life in an entertaining way. Think of the best speakers in the world. Maybe some have even impacted your life. That’s because of the power of effective storytelling. You are also more likely to believe something by hearing the story behind it rather than just hearing the plain facts.
  • Immerse yourself
Bennt Lewis has learned to speak 8 languages fluently in less than 10 years. His aim is to learn how to speak a new language in less than 3 months. The technique that he uses is called "Total Immersion".

    How does it work?

It works by using the language in every aspect of day to day life. When you’re using the target language instead of your native tongue in everything you do, the learning speed dramatically increases.

Actors who are preparing for a role tend to step in the shoes of their character. This is part of the Stanislavski system of training. Robert De Niro is famous for employing this method.

  • Learn by teaching
Many complicated things can be learned rapidly if you try to explain them while you don’t fully grasp them yourself. It may sound paradoxical, but it’s quite straightforward: If you try to explain a complicated fact to a 5-year old, your mind will "fill in the blanks" and fully understand the concept.
  • Scan and look for the essentials
The fact is, not everything that’s written is important. That’s why you should scan before reading word for word to identify the key elements within a text. As you may or may not know, your mental energy is limited. Conserving it and saving it for what’s important is an effective strategy to become a better learner.

Wrapping it up

Now that you’re "armed" with these tips, you should not waste one moment. Your mind is a beautiful thing and the best thing you can feed it with is knowledge.

Learning is the backbone of success just as education is the backbone of civilization. Being effective in learning is one of the best skills anyone can have.
