The Importance of Family Bonding
and A Safe Home
By Mikkie Mills
If you have a family, then there is nothing more important to you than your children or spouse. Making sure they have a fun and happy life is the great pride of being a leader within your family unit. And it is key that you have an environment of family bonding and safety. Here’s why these two things are so crucial for your family unit:
Your Kids Look Up to You
Children look to their parents’ behavior as a sign of how they should behave. You might not think they pick up on the little things, but kids are like sponges. The way you carry yourself is evident to them.
If you are not talking with your spouse in a loving manner, they will notice. The same goes for them. Kids need and crave attention. The more you give them, the more they will thrive. So be sure to treat them the way you want them to treat others. Remember, you are their role model so don’t have greater expectations for them than you have of yourself.
More Family Bonding Means More Open Expression
Set aside time to have family time together. This could be as simple as a dinner every night where you have conversations about your daily lives. This means that your kids and spouse will have an easier time coming to you when they want to talk about something. As your kids grow into their teenage years, this will be increasingly important to keep them from indulging in drugs or partying as an escape from their stress.
How you overcome adversity as a family will have an effect on everyone’s psychology. Kids need to know that they have a safe home where their parents are going to help them through difficult times. For instance, when divorces happen, parents often use the children as a way to get back at the other parent. This ends up backfiring, putting the child in the middle of a psychological battle between emotional adults in a way that will only harm them long term.
Having Fun Together
Families that have fun together stay together. A huge part of bonding is making sure to enjoy the good things in life. This ranges from going on vacation, to picnicking, to doing arts together. Find ways to instill fun things around the house as well. For example, financing in-ground pools> is more affordable than ever, and a few video games here and there won’t hurt anything (after all you watched t.v. as a kid and you came out fine - and that’s not even interactive).
Every family should feel secure in their own home. With the rising crime stats today, you can never be too careful. Make sure that you have the best security system that you can afford installed in your home. It will alert you to potential threats and send the emergency authorities in the event of a break-in or fire. You can also log in remotely and few security footage on many systems. While it does cost a little bit each month, ask yourself what is more important: paying a little more each month and eating out less or protecting your family from harm?
When it comes to being a parent, you want your children to have the best lives you can afford. Thankfully, there are various things you can do to promote family bonding and safety. Don’t overlook them, or it could put a strain on your relationship with your children and the way they see you, now and into the future. Implement the advice above so you can enjoy pride and peace of mind.
