What to Expect During Your Baby's First Dental Visit

Baby's First Dental Visit

In the United States, dentists recommend that you take your baby to their first dental appointment when you see their first tooth. But, the first dental visit age is sometime before their first birthday or if you notice anything concerning. You're probably wondering what they could do at that age!

While that seems quite young, there are many benefits including getting them used to the dentist and preventing any issues. Read on to find out what to expect at your baby's first dental visit and more!

Why It's Important?

As mentioned, there are several benefits to having their first visit at such a young age. 21.4% of U.S. children aged 2-5 have undiagnosed cavities. Getting proper treatment early on is vital to prevent more cavities from appearing.

Early diagnosis is also important in conditions concerning bite and jaw alignment. Overall, it's best to be aware of what is happening before it gets much worse.

Plus, getting your child used to a pediatric dentist will save you a lot of stress. Many children are scared to go to the dentist and this is a great way to take that fear out of it.

Prepare Baby for Dentist Visit

Before your baby's first pediatric dentist visit there are a few things that you can do. First and foremost, keep up with their dental hygiene at home.

If they don't have teeth, clean their gums with a cloth and water. When teeth begin to show up, use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste (made for infants).

In addition, you can show them videos of dentists, fill out paperwork in advance, and make a list of questions to ask.

What To Expect

What to expect at your infant or toddler's first dental visit depends a lot on how they behave. If they seem too wiggly, the dentist may ask for you to have them sit in your lap. Of course, you will be with them the entire time!

Your baby's first pediatric dentist will then check their mouth, jaw, and gums. They'll be looking for cavities, proper development, and other issues.

A dental hygenist or dentist will then clean your child's teeth. During this visit, they will also provide you with advice on how to care for your child's teeth. They will also be able to answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

Following Up

Your pediatric dentist in Arlington, Texas, will likely instruct you on how to proceed following the appointment. If any concerns are brought up then they will have advice on what to do in terms of treatments or what to watch for.

Be sure to continue to bring them back for regular visits. Most dentists recommend doing so twice a year.

A Successful First Dental Visit

Taking your baby to their first dental visit at the right age is highly important to their lifelong dental hygiene. Now that you know what to expect you can put your mind at ease and start preparing!
